Job Description

Part-Time Structured Literacy Instructor WNY Dyslexia Specialists, LLC Amherst, NY Job Details Part-time $28 - $32 an hour 23 hours ago Benefits Paid training Life insurance Qualifications Teaching Certification Bachelor's degree Attention to detail Working with students Literacy education Classroom Teaching Full Job Description Part-Time Structured Literacy Apprentice WNY Dyslexia Specialists | Amherst, NY $28-$32/hour | Part-time | In person Apprenticeship begins October 5, 2026 WNY Dyslexia Specialists is seeking two educators to join our instructional team through a structured, paid apprenticeship beginning October 5. Our instructors provide individualized literacy intervention for students with dyslexia. Previous Orton-Gillingham or structured literacy experience is welcome, but it is not required . We are prepared to teach our instructional methodology to the right candidates. What we cannot teach as easily is the ability to notice . Our instructors must pay close attention to how students approach reading and spelling tasks, recognize subtle patterns in their errors and responses, distinguish what is secure from what is still developing, and use those observations to make thoughtful instructional decisions. Who We're Looking For We are looking for experienced educators who: Notice details others may overlook Think analytically about student performance Look for patterns rather than isolated mistakes Are curious about why a student responds in a particular way Communicate observations clearly and precisely Welcome direct coaching and feedback Are dependable and professional Are comfortable working within an established instructional system Want to develop expertise in dyslexia intervention and structured literacy Classroom teaching or other experience involving independent instructional decision-making is strongly preferred. Schedule and Caseload Development The paid apprenticeship begins October 5, 2026 . Apprentices are not expected to carry a full instructional schedule when training begins. During the apprenticeship, paid hours will include training, observation, guided practice, and increasingly independent instructional responsibilities. Hours will increase as competencies are demonstrated. Our goal is for successful apprentices to be ready to begin teaching students independently by December 1 . New instructors typically begin with approximately two students . Caseloads then grow gradually as the instructor demonstrates readiness for additional responsibility and as student enrollment and scheduling allow. Our long-term school-year instructional schedule is Monday-Friday, 2:30-6:30 PM . Candidates should be able to grow into this schedule as their caseload develops. The Apprenticeship Selected candidates will complete an approximately eight-week, competency-based paid apprenticeship .
Training includes:
Observation of experienced instructors Explicit training in our instructional approach Guided analysis of student performance and errors Supervised practice with individual components of lessons Increasing instructional responsibility as competencies are demonstrated Ongoing coaching and feedback Preparation for an initial independent caseload The apprenticeship is designed to prepare successful candidates to begin independent instruction by December 1. Advancement is based on demonstrated competency , not simply the completion of a set number of weeks. Long-Term Commitment We invest significant time and resources in developing our instructors. This position is intended for educators who want to become ongoing members of the WNY Dyslexia Specialists instructional team. Candidates should consider whether upcoming commitments—including graduate programs, practicums, student teaching, internships, relocation, or other professional changes—could substantially affect their availability during the next 12-18 months. Our Selection Process Close observation and instructional reasoning are essential to this work. For that reason, candidates who advance through our initial screening process will complete a brief observation and instructional-thinking exercise . No specialized dyslexia or Orton-Gillingham knowledge is required for this exercise. We want to see what you notice, how you organize your observations, the questions you ask, and how you think about a learner's performance. Selected applicants will also be asked to confirm their ability to meet the scheduling and long-term availability requirements of the position before an offer is made. Qualifications Bachelor's degree required Professional experience teaching or providing instruction to children Strong written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated attention to detail Ability to receive and apply feedback Reliable transportation to our Amherst office Ability to commit to the apprenticeship beginning October 5 Ability to grow into the Monday-Friday, 2:30-6:30 PM instructional schedule Teaching certification, special education experience, reading intervention experience, and Orton-Gillingham or structured literacy training are welcome but not required . Compensation $28-$32 per hour , based on experience. Apprentices are paid for scheduled training, observation, supervised practice, and instructional hours.
To Apply Please submit:
Résumé Brief cover letter explaining your interest in this work and the experiences you believe have prepared you to work with students who struggle with reading To help us identify candidates who read carefully, please include the word "Compass" somewhere in your cover letter. Applications that do not include both a résumé and cover letter will not be considered. We will review applications on a rolling basis until both apprenticeship positions are filled . Qualified applicants will be contacted regarding the next step in our screening process.
