Look no further! If you love working with kids and are looking to get into the field of education, this is a great way to start! The Literacy Instructor will report directly to our Program Director. They will work with another staff member and be responsible for the overall care and safety of children ages 5-12. The instructor is responsible for developing age-appropriate lesson plans and tailoring the curriculum for different grade levels and various learning styles. The instructor will teach elementary school students in grades K-5 a variety of skills related to literacy. This position will be a part of our Youth and Family Services offered at Sunnyside Community Services, which includes a pre-kindergarten program, after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, high school job readiness, career readiness, enrichment programming, and Adult and Immigrant Services. Responsibilities Teach literacy to 1-2 classes daily. Each class will be 45-55 minutes total. Develop age-appropriate lesson plans and submit lesson plans on time. Tailor curriculum for each level of instruction to match student needs. Prepare materials and examples in advance for students' understanding during activities. Be the main support in putting together a showcase for the parents at the end of each of the 3 units. Collaborate with other instructors, as well as group leaders, to make sure everyone is working towards a common goal for the parent showcase. Meet regularly with the supervisor to share best practices and address challenges. Maintain the cleanliness of the program space and ensure program supplies are well organized and in good condition. Qualifications Must be 18 years old or older. high school diploma or equivalent required, some college or relevant degree in education or related field preferred. A minimum of two years of experience working with children is required, experience working in an after-school environment is preferred. Before hiring, fingerprints and background checks from the Department of Education and Department of Health must be finalized, along with a completed medical form. Prior to employment, two professional reference letters and one personal reference letter are mandatory. Must be able to work 13 school holidays throughout the year. This position runs through September 2026
