POSITION TITLE
Literacy Specialist

Bachelor Degree Required Valid Texas Teacher Certificate, preferred Retired Teachers welcomed
REPORTS TO
Supervisor
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Up to 8 hours daily
POSITION OVERVIEW
A literacy specialist works with children to help them overcome their struggles in reading and reading comprehension, vocabulary and critical thinking.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Work one on one or in small groups for the majority of the work day to help students improve their ability to read Use reading exercises to develop the students' ability to understand text Expand students' listening and speaking skills through exercises, games and activities Develop the students' ability to think and write clearly and with purpose Determine what is working and what you can improve to help students meet their goals Work with teachers and administrators to make recommendations on the reading curriculum Assess students' needs, strengths and weaknesses May be required to organize, plan and implement classroom activities and projects
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Exhibit dependability and punctuality in assigned duties Display appropriate personal and professional traits that exhibit a positive role model for students Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, directors and teachers Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly Compile, maintain and file all physical and digital reports, records and other documents required Retirement is through the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Texas and not Social Security. TRS requires five years of participation before any retirement funds are vested. Texas Workers Compensation covers workers in this position. Some employees are partially or fully funded with federal funds. Staff should ask their campus Director if they are paid from federal funds.
