Chabot's mission is to spark and engage curiosity, deepen access and inclusion within science education, and provide opportunity for pathways into careers in the sciences. Situated on a beautiful 14-acre campus nestled in the redwoods of Oakland's regional parks, the Chabot Space & Science Center includes immersive exhibits, hands-on learning activities, science festivals, a state-of-the-art planetarium, and is home to the official NASA Ames Visitor Center. Chabot's research-level astronomical observatory, featuring three large scale telescopes, is the largest observatory complex free for regular public viewing in the Western United States. Part-Time Science Instructor Position Overview:

The Science Instructor is primarily responsible for facilitating prepared educational workshops, live science shows, and other learning experiences for visiting field trip classes, museum guests, and community audiences. Science Instructors deliver established educational programming using provided curriculum, lessons plans, and instructional materials. Science Instructors may also facilitate educational content for the public, including rolling workshops, live demonstrations, hikes, special events, and off-site experiences. This hourly (non-exempt) seasonal role reports to the Science Education Manager. This seasonal part-time role has an expected start date of September 30th and end date of June 1 to align with operational needs to serve our guests during the school year. Expected hours are variable between 16-19 hours per week, and will typically include daytime work Wednesday-Friday and some evening and weekend shifts for special programs and events.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Teach hands-on science and engineering workshops from provided plans across a variety of group sizes, age ranges, and science subjects. Topics are primarily focused on engineering and design, space sciences, and physical sciences, but may also include other science subjects. Facilitate other educational experiences on the museum floor, in our outdoor spaces, or off-site. Maintain and prepare science lab rooms, classrooms and materials for daily programs. This may include tasks such as: clean up, reset, and set up materials after each lab; establish and maintain overall organization and cleanliness of labs; restock supplies as needed; and maintain supply inventory. Collaborate with volunteers assisting with educational activities. Provide a high level of visitor engagement and experience by supporting needs across departments including opening and closing the museum. Participate in Chabot professional development and assigned meetings. Other duties as assigned.

Cross Training:

Chabot cross-trains staff across key operational functions to ensure appropriate staffing, visitor support, safety, and a positive guest experience. Employees may be trained to assist with front desk and reception, planetarium operations, floor resets, visitor greeting and wayfinding, field trips, crowd management, café functions, and traffic assistance as needed.

Required Qualifications:

Pursuing or completed BA/BS in engineering, science, education, or other relevant field of study. At least 1 year of experience teaching/instructing children in a formal or informal education setting. Experience communicating scientific and/or technical information with people from diverse language and cultural backgrounds, ability levels, and knowledge or exposure to subject information. Strong presentation and public speaking skills across a wide range of group sizes and ages. Ability to take initiative to support education programs and visitor experience in a fluid museum context. This includes adapting content, pacing, delivery, and making quick decisions as needed to respond to educational and museum floor environments. Demonstrated ability to be punctual, dependable, and communicative in a professional setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with hands-on, inquiry-based, and/or project-based learning. Fluency in Spanish or other languages common to the Bay Area.
