Job Description

7th & 8th Grade Math & Science TeacherJob Overview At Modern Schoolhouse, we believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in meaningful work—not simply completing busy work, following scripted lessons, or checking boxes. That might mean measuring shadows to calculate the height of a tree, testing soil collected from the neighborhood, conducting a science experiment, or turning geometry into a real-world problem worth solving. We believe middle school students are capable of deep thinking, serious academics, meaningful scientific inquiry, and plenty of laughter along the way. We are also a school that is always on the go. Learning regularly takes us outside the four walls of the classroom and into our community through field studies, field trips, hands-on projects, outdoor experiences, and opportunities to learn directly from professionals and experts. We believe the community—and the larger world—is an important part of the classroom. We also understand that math requires rote memorization and hard work from textbook formats in order to digest a full math course. Modern Schoolhouse also takes a holistic approach to education . Academic achievement matters deeply, but educating a child involves more than academics alone. We intentionally support students as they develop independence, responsibility, confidence, curiosity, strong relationships, and the skills necessary to become capable young adults. Modern Schoolhouse is seeking a highly qualified, community-minded, energetic, and creative educator to teach math and science to students in grades 7 and 8. This position is ideal for a teacher who values strong academics, curiosity-driven learning, and real-world application—and who enjoys learning alongside students as much as leading them. Our teachers have the freedom to go deep instead of simply going wide, build instead of drill, and explore instead of defaulting to worksheets . We are looking for an educator with the creativity, flexibility, and sense of adventure to make the most of that freedom. What You'll Do Develop and implement engaging, standards-aligned instruction in middle school math, including Pre-Algebra and Algebra , typically in small groups of approximately 4-12 students. Teach 7th and 8th grade science through a combination of rigorous academic instruction, scientific inquiry, experimentation, and real-world application. Maintain high academic expectations while recognizing and supporting the individual needs of students. Design and facilitate frequent hands-on science labs and math workshops that emphasize exploration, experimentation, reasoning, and problem-solving. Plan and lead field studies, field trips, and other learning experiences outside the classroom. The community is part of our classroom. Teachers also participate in an annual overnight field trip with students. Collaborate closely with the 7th and 8th grade humanities teacher to develop interdisciplinary projects and meaningful connections across subject areas. Work with community professionals and organizations to create authentic learning experiences for students. Teach in ways that promote critical thinking, scientific inquiry, mathematical reasoning, curiosity, and intellectual independence. Communicate regularly and effectively with families and assist in developing individualized education plans and student supports when needed. Create a classroom environment that is safe, structured, joyful, respectful, and intellectually challenging . Prepare and accompany students for the SSEF Regional Science Fair , with support and guidance from an experienced mentor. Participate in curriculum development and the ongoing improvement of instructional materials and programs. Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects, field experiences, and school-wide initiatives. Mentor students both academically and behaviorally, helping them develop confidence, responsibility, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. Bring creativity, flexibility, humor, and a willingness to think outside the box to your work each day. Who You Are You believe middle school students are capable of serious thinking and meaningful academic work , and you enjoy challenging them to rise to those expectations. You enjoy teaching math and science in ways that are hands-on, inquiry-based, and connected to the real world. You value structure and fun, high expectations and strong relationships, academic rigor and the development of the whole child . You are comfortable with a school environment that is active and sometimes unconventional. Some days learning happens at a desk or laboratory table; other days it may happen in the woods, at a museum, beside a river, inside a local business, or somewhere else entirely. You are collaborative, reflective, dependable, and willing to continually improve your craft. Most importantly, you genuinely enjoy working with middle school students and recognize both the challenges and the tremendous potential of this age group. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Education, Science, Mathematics, or a related field. Advanced degrees, teaching certifications, or additional STEM-related credentials are a plus. Prior experience working with middle school students, with demonstrated proficiency in math and/or science instruction. Experience with curriculum development, instructional design, lesson planning, and classroom management. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to engage and support students with diverse learning needs. Demonstrated ability to mentor students academically and behaviorally while maintaining a positive, supportive, and appropriately structured learning environment. Willingness and ability to participate in field studies, field trips, outdoor learning experiences, and the school's annual overnight trip. Why Modern Schoolhouse? Because we believe school should be rigorous, joyful, curious, active, and human . We believe students deserve opportunities to experience what they are learning rather than simply read about it. We believe strong academics and holistic education belong together. We believe some of the best learning happens when students leave the classroom and engage with the real world. And we believe great teaching happens when educators are supported, trusted, and given the freedom to actually teach . If that sounds like the kind of school where you would thrive, we would love to hear from you.
