Job Type:
Full-time, Contract Monday-Friday | 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Facilitate Learning That Matters. What happens when physical science moves beyond the textbook and scholars begin using it to understand how information travels, how technology works, and how scientific knowledge can help solve real problems? That is 8th Grade Physical Science at Odyssey Atlanta. We are seeking a dynamic middle grades science educator who can transform physical science into an active laboratory for investigation, engineering, problem-solving, and innovation. At Odyssey, scholars do not simply learn scientific concepts - they test them, build with them, question them, and use them to create. Odyssey Atlanta is a transformational academic enrichment program serving motivated scholars from Atlanta Public Schools and the greater Atlanta community. For more than 20 years, Odyssey has created joyful, challenging summer learning experiences designed to expand students' ambitions and empower them on a successful journey through college and a fulfilling career. The 8th Grade Experience Odyssey's Middle School curriculum is organized around a Justice Framework that helps scholars examine how environmental, social, economic, and technological systems influence people, communities, opportunities, and well-being. In 8th Grade Physical Science, scholars explore the intersection of science, technology, cybersecurity, innovation, and economic opportunity. Through hands-on investigations and engineering challenges aligned with Georgia Physical Science standards, scholars explore scientific principles connected to how information moves through the physical world and how those systems can be made safer and more secure. Along the way, scholars encounter technology and cybersecurity professionals who help them see where classroom science exists in the real world - and the careers, industries, and opportunities that can grow from it. The experience ultimately asks scholars to see themselves not simply as consumers of technology, but as scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers capable of shaping what comes next. What You'll Do As an Odyssey 8th Grade Physical Science Teacher, you will create a learning environment where scholars investigate, build, test, question, revise, and apply scientific ideas to authentic challenges.
You will:
Design and facilitate engaging, standards-aligned Physical Science instruction within an interdisciplinary project-based learning experience Create hands-on investigations that help scholars understand scientific concepts through experimentation, observation, data collection, analysis, and engineering Connect physical science concepts to technology, communication systems, cybersecurity, and other real-world applications Guide scholars through an iterative process of questioning, designing, building, testing, learning, and improving Help scholars use scientific evidence and data to explain phenomena, defend ideas, and make informed decisions Integrate mathematics, literacy, technology, and engineering naturally into scientific investigation and problem-solving Collaborate with technology and cybersecurity professionals who bring industry expertise and authentic applications into the scholar experience Help scholars explore connections among scientific knowledge, innovation, career pathways, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity Guide scholars toward meaningful products, demonstrations, presentations, and culminating experiences for authentic audiences Extend learning beyond the classroom through field experiences during weeks 2-4 that connect scholars with people, places, industries, and ideas across the Atlanta community Use assessment data and daily observations to identify scholar needs, differentiate instruction, and document academic growth Build a classroom culture where curiosity is encouraged, productive struggle is expected, and scholars feel confident experimenting with ideas Bring energy, professionalism, flexibility, creativity, and joy to our summer learning community From Investigation to Innovation The summer experience culminates in Odyssey's signature Shark Tank, where scholars bring together science, technology, creativity, communication, and entrepreneurship. Scholars develop and pitch a technology- or security-informed product, service, or solution to an authentic audience. They must explain the problem they are addressing, demonstrate the thinking behind their solution, use evidence to support their decisions, and communicate why their idea matters. The goal is bigger than producing a successful pitch. It is helping scholars experience what happens when scientific knowledge becomes a tool for innovation, agency, and opportunity. Who Thrives at Odyssey? We are looking for science educators who believe the best way to understand science is often to do science. Strong Odyssey teachers are curious themselves. They enjoy experimentation, asking questions they may not immediately know the answers to, collaborating with experts from other fields, and creating opportunities for young people to learn through investigation and discovery. You may be a great fit if you: Believe deeply in the potential of every scholar and maintain high expectations while providing meaningful support Know how to build authentic relationships with middle school students Can make abstract scientific concepts understandable, relevant, and engaging Enjoy laboratory investigation, engineering challenges, experimentation, and hands-on learning Understand that rigorous learning and joyful learning can and should exist together Are excited about interdisciplinary and project-based teaching rather than relying solely on traditional instructional approaches Are willing to learn alongside scholars and collaborate with professionals whose expertise may extend beyond your own Value inquiry, evidence, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and productive struggle Are comfortable using technology as a tool for investigation and learning Are reflective, resourceful, flexible, and eager to grow alongside other educators and industry professionals Have demonstrated success supporting the academic growth of students from historically underserved communities Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Science Education, Physical Science, Physics, Chemistry, Middle Grades Education, or a related field Experience teaching middle school science, preferably Physical Science or grades 6-8 Minimum of two years of teaching experience preferred Current Georgia teaching certification in Science or Middle Grades Science preferred Current experience teaching in an accredited Georgia public, charter, or independent school preferred Experience with laboratory science, engineering design, project-based learning, STEM/STEAM, technology integration, or inquiry-based instruction is highly valued Cybersecurity experience is not required; curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to learn alongside Odyssey's technology and industry partners are essential More Than a Summer Job Odyssey is intentionally different. Our teachers have the opportunity to step outside some of the constraints of the traditional school year and teach creatively, collaborate with industry professionals, experiment thoughtfully, and help young people experience science as something they can use—not simply something they study. Each summer, Odyssey scholars build academic skills, relationships, confidence, resilience, and a stronger sense of their own possibility. If you are a science educator who wants to spend part of your summer helping young people investigate boldly, build thoughtfully, solve meaningful problems, and imagine themselves in the future of science and technology—we are looking forward to meeting you. A quest for knowledge. A path through college—and beyond.
