Organization Details Organization Information The Harlan County School District is located in rural Southeastern Kentucky. The community's economy has been based primarily on coal, but diversification for adventure tourism is making significant gains. The county is home to the old-growth Blanton Forest, Pine Mountain Settlement School, Kingdom Come State Park, Kentucky Coal Mining Museum and other great attractions. The county is also home to many species of wildlife, including elk and black bear. The district is comprised of eight K-8 facilities and a 9-12 high school. Classrooms are equipped with Promethean or Smartboards. Many classrooms are equipped with sound enhancement technology to provide for enhanced learning. New programs are in place to boost student achievement. The district is a member of the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative which is the recipient of a $29 million federal Race to the Top grant. Through the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative, students and staff are receiving invaluable resources through professional development, school culture building activities and technology upgrades. The district is also a part of the federal Berea College Gear Up program designed to increase college and career readiness of students in the district. The district has numerous extra-curricular activities at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Parent involvement is encouraged.
