Sociology Description:

The Department of Sociology at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor in Sociology with research specialization in computing and society to begin fall semester 2027. The successful candidate will study the societal drivers and effects of computing as a social and material force, applying sociological theories and methods to questions of AI, machine learning, quantum computing, and/or social media. They will use rigorous and theoretically driven qualitative and/or quantitative methods, and their work will have strong potential for external funding. An ideal candidate will be prepared to respond to growing student demand, both undergraduate and graduate students, to learn about how social factors are built into computing systems and how computing systems organize social life. Additionally, we seek a faculty member who will complement our department's existing strengths in sociological study of demography, health, social psychology, and/or work. This position will also support the Arts & Science Core curriculum, with the opportunity to teach in the first-year Core or develop an Exploratory Core course.

Vanderbilt expects excellence in research and teaching. A Ph. D. in sociology is required.
