Job Description

Category Schools - Special Education Teacher Job Type Contract Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students with diverse needs in Alaska for the 2026-2027 school year. We are seeking dedicated special education professionals to fill several vital positions serving secondary and middle school students with intensive needs, as well as a unique blended role that combines special education and general education responsibilities at a multi-grade elementary school accessible by air travel.
Key Qualifications:
Valid Special Education Teaching Certification (or eligibility to obtain) Experience working with intensive needs (self-contained) populations, preferably at middle or high school levels Flexibility and adaptability in meeting the unique needs of each student Ability to manage a caseload of approximately 10 students, focusing on individualized education plans Interest in supporting both special education and general education, particularly in multi-grade settings Strong collaboration and communication skills with students, families, and school teams Willingness to work in fly-in rural school communities (for the combined role)
Primary Responsibilities:
Deliver specialized instruction to students with intensive needs in a self-contained classroom (grades 6-8 or grades 9+) Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education plans (IEPs) in compliance with school and district guidelines Foster a supportive, structured, and inclusive learning environment Coordinate with general education teachers and specialists to ensure integrated support Maintain accurate records, progress notes, and data on each student's development For the combined position, teach both special education and general education classes at a rural, multi-grade elementary school This is a unique chance to make a meaningful impact across various age groups and rural communities, offering professional growth and the experience of Alaska's natural beauty.
