A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

The appropriate certified candidate must possess Arizona Special Education certification, Cross Categorical or Mild Moderate certificate, or LD teaching certificate. SEI endorsement preferred.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Valid IVP Level One AZ Fingerprint Clearance Card is required.
Employment Information:
2026-27 school year; 194 work days ( 216/212 day teacher calendar) Salary link: Certified Future Requirement for K-5: Literacy Endorsement (unless you hold a Reading K-8, Reading K-12 or Reading Specialist K-12 endorsement)
Timeline:
Teachers who were certified on or before 8/1/2025 have until 8/1/2028 to obtain the literacy endorsement. Teachers who certify after 8/1/2025 will have 3 years from certificate issuance to obtain the literacy endorsement. Teachers who graduate from AZ colleges in 2025 should have completed the coursework and should have the certificate on their licenses.
