A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Duties Design and deliver individualized instruction aligned with students' IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) to meet their unique developmental, behavioral, and academic needs. Implement instructional modifications and accommodations to support students with disabilities across core subjects such as literacy, math, science, and social skills. Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, counselors, and other specialists to create cohesive learning experiences and behavioral support plans. Conduct assessments to monitor student progress using standardized testing, formative evaluations, and observational data; adjust teaching methods accordingly. Manage classroom behavior through positive reinforcement techniques, behavior management strategies, and applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles to foster a safe and productive learning environment. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress, discuss concerns, and coordinate support strategies. Integrate educational technology tools and learning technology platforms to enhance instructional delivery and student engagement. Requirements Valid teaching credential with certification in special education or equivalent licensure; experience working with students with disabilities preferred. Demonstrated expertise in developing curriculum tailored for learners with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), deaf or visually impaired education needs. Strong knowledge of special education law, IEP development process, instructional modifications, and educational compliance standards. Experience working with children across early childhood to elementary levels; familiarity with preschool or early intervention programs is a plus. Proficiency in classroom management techniques, behavior management for students with special needs, and behavioral therapy methods such as ABA or music therapy. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including students, parents, colleagues, and external specialists. Skilled in using educational technology tools for lesson planning, instructional design, tutoring, and assessment purposes.
