Special Education Movement Instructor

Wellness In Motion Wellness In Motion is seeking an energetic, patient, and movement-focused Special Education Movement Instructor to work with children, teens, and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This is a highly active, movement-based position . We are looking for someone who is comfortable getting on the floor, running, jumping, throwing, catching, demonstrating exercises, playing sports, navigating obstacle courses, and using movement as the primary way to engage and teach. This is not a traditional classroom-based special education position . Sessions take place in real-world environments such as parks, gyms, homes, recreation spaces, and throughout the community. What You'll Do The Movement Instructor will provide individualized and small-group movement experiences designed around each participant's abilities, interests, and goals.
Sessions may include:
Strength, endurance, and functional fitness activities Running, jumping, climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, and carrying Balance and coordination activities Body awareness and body control Motor planning and movement sequencing Ball skills, throwing, catching, kicking, and striking Basketball, soccer, kickball, softball, cornhole, and other recreational sports Obstacle courses and movement challenges Agility, speed, and change-of-direction activities Gross motor development Movement imitation and following physical demonstrations Pacing, force control, and graded movement Fitness routines and exercise participation Community recreation and active leisure skills Confidence and independence through movement Heavy Focus on Body Coaching A major part of this position is helping individuals better understand how to use and control their bodies during movement . You may coach participants through skills such as: "Slow your body down." "Plant your feet before you throw." "Look at the target, set your body, then move." "Use less force." "Shift your weight forward." "Let's try the movement again." We want instructors who enjoy breaking movement down, demonstrating it, practicing it repeatedly, and finding different ways to help someone successfully learn a physical skill. Who We're Looking For This position may be a strong fit for someone with experience or education in: Exercise Science Kinesiology Physical Education Special Education Adapted Physical Activity Personal Training Sports Coaching Recreation Motor Development Behavioral or developmental services Working with neurodivergent individuals or individuals with disabilities Experience working with the neurodiverse/special needs community is strongly preferred. Candidates should also have a genuine background or strong interest in fitness, sports, exercise, or movement instruction . You Should Be Comfortable With This is a physically active job.
Instructors should be comfortable:
Being physically active throughout sessions Demonstrating exercises and sports movements Running and changing direction Squatting, kneeling, crawling, and getting on/off the floor Setting up and carrying movement equipment Working outdoors at parks and recreation spaces Providing repeated demonstrations and physical cues Adjusting activities when someone learns differently Working with individuals who may communicate nontraditionally Remaining patient when a skill requires significant repetition Making movement fun without losing the purpose behind the activity What Makes Someone Successful Here We're not simply looking for someone who can lead a workout. We're looking for someone who can observe movement, coach the body, and adapt an activity to the individual in front of them. You should be able to recognize when someone is struggling with a movement and think: How can I make this easier to understand? Can I slow the movement down? Can I change the equipment? Can I demonstrate it differently? Can I turn this into a game? Can I break the movement into smaller steps? Creativity, patience, energy, and the ability to connect with different personalities are extremely important. About Wellness In Motion Life Doesn't Happen in a Therapy Room. Wellness In Motion provides individualized wellness, movement, life-skills, fitness, and community-based programming for individuals with diverse abilities. Our work happens where life happens—parks, gyms, homes, recreation spaces, and throughout the community. Our goal is to help individuals build greater confidence, physical ability, participation, independence, and meaningful engagement in everyday life through practical, individualized experiences.
Pay:
$25.00 - $30.00 per hour
