Full Job Description Overview:

Truth serves a culturally diverse population of 6th-12th grade students in Washington, DC.
Position:
Sojourner Truth PCS is seeking an innovative and systems-oriented Middle School Special Education Teacher and Case Manager. Truth has a non-traditional model where students spend time each day in multi-age groups for both classes and self-directed time. The Special Education Teacher will report directly to the Assistant Principal. The Special Education teacher will actively co-teach a classroom of students alongside a Humanities content teacher, and will support students for targeted small group and individual workshops in that subject area . Truth is looking for Special Education candidates with strong content knowledge who are inspired and excited by our non-traditional structure and for the potential that these innovations have to provide improved opportunities to serve students with disabilities. Design Principles:
Students need to be prepared for life , not just for school. Each student's identity, voice, perspectives, and choices matter.
Responsibilities:
Working with the Special Education Coordinator to ensure proper writing and implementation of 504 plans and IEPs Building strong and positive relationships with students and families Documenting and maintaining compliance for all mandated and IEP-related support services Co-teaching lessons in Humanities Engaging in a cooperative planning process with Humanities and STEM teachers in order to be prepared to implement a productive and seamless co-teaching model Contributing effective differentiation and scaffolding strategies to core content class plans Utilizing competency framework data, i-Ready results, NWEA MAP scores, and all other available data to inform support plans for each student Tailoring daily small-group and one-on-one workshops in order to support students' advancement towards explicit goals Motivated by the mission to set a national model for a high-quality, urban public Montessori secondary school; Knowledge of educational innovations in instructional strategies, alternative assessment methods, blended learning, supports for students with disabilities, and cooperative learning; Demonstrated commitment to the potential of all youth to succeed in rigorous educational settings; Training, or willingness to seek training in the Montessori method; Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; Master's degree preferred

Physical Requirements Detailed Description Standing/Walking (50-70%) : Ability to stand or walk for extended periods during instruction or supervision. Capacity to move around the classroom and school premises, including climbing stairs. Sitting (20-40%) : Remaining in a stationary seated position for tasks such as administrative work, planning, or direct instruction in some teaching settings. Lifting/Carrying (5-10%) : Lifting light to moderate objects such as books, teaching materials, or classroom equipment (typically 10-25 pounds). Potentially helping students with physical disabilities or moving furniture for classroom setup. Reaching/Bending/Crouching (5-15%) : Extending the arms above shoulder level, forward, or sideways to access items. Flexing the body forward, often at the waist, to lower or retrieve objects from lower heights. Bending at the hips and knees to lower the body closer to the ground, often in a squatting position. Use of Hands (20-30%) : Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, or managing classroom technology such as projectors or smart boards. Hands are also used for demonstrations, guiding students with tasks, or handling classroom materials. Speaking/Hearing (90-100%) : Clear verbal communication with students, staff, and parents. Ability to hear student responses and conversations, especially in larger classrooms or group settings. Visual Requirements (90-100%) : Ability to read and interpret documents such as lesson plans, student work, or computer screens. Monitoring student activity both in the classroom and potentially during outdoor activities.
