A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct and consultative instructional services to students with visual impairments in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Assess students' functional vision, learning media, and assistive technology needs to support educational access. Adapt curriculum materials and classroom activities into accessible formats, including braille, large print, tactile graphics, and digital/assistive technology. Teach students skills for independence, including orientation and mobility (in collaboration with certified specialists), self-advocacy, and daily living skills. Collaborate with general education teachers, special educators, parents, and related service providers to integrate accommodations and modifications into classroom instruction. Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions, providing recommendations to support students' academic and functional goals. Train and support staff in effective strategies, accommodations, and technologies for students with visual impairments. Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, instructional plans, progress monitoring, and compliance reports. Stay current with best practices in visual impairment education through ongoing professional development and research
