POSITION SUMMARY
To develop in each exceptional education pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil's ability. This position reports to the Principal.
KEY JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Writes reports to summarize student performance, social growth, or physical development. Provides students positive feedback to encourage them and help them develop an appreciation for physical education. Provides individual or small groups of students with adapted physical education instruction that meets desired physical needs or goals. Prepares lesson plans in accordance with individualized education plans (IEPs) and the functional abilities or needs of students. Maintains thorough student records to document attendance, participation, or progress, ensuring confidentiality of all records. Maintains inventory of instructional equipment, materials, or aids. Evaluates the motor needs of individual students to determine their need for adapted physical education services. Assists in screening or placement of students in adapted physical education programs. Assesses students' physical progress or needs. Adapts instructional techniques to the age and skill levels of students. Establishes and maintains standards of behavior to create safe, orderly, and effective environments for learning. Communicates behavioral observations and student progress reports to students, parents, teachers, or administrators. Provides adapted physical education services to students with intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairments, or other disabling condition. Instructs students, using adapted physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement.
KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree required. Must have a clear renewable certificate or be eligible for a clear renewable certificate in Health and Physical Education (P-12); additional certification in Special Education General Curriculum (P-12) preferred. Normal classroom/school setting. Must be able to stand and walk approximately seven (7) to seven and one-half (7½) hours per day. Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. Light lifting or carrying 20 lbs. or less. The 2026-2027 salary scales are not yet available.
