Clare Woods Academy, a non-public, non-profit alternative day school, is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Teacher to join our specialized educational team. In our therapeutic day school setting, we provide unique programming for children and young adults ages 5 to 22 who face learning and behavioral challenges, including many students on the Autism Spectrum. Our schedule includes holidays and plenty of other days off aligned with the school year calendar, allowing for a healthy work-life balance. Responsibilities:
Foster a safe, respectful, and supportive classroom environment. Integrate social-emotional learning into daily instruction. Design, implement, and monitor a variety of creative and individualized sensory and therapeutic supports (e.g., sensory breaks, 'heavy work' activities, alternative seating, visual supports) to enhance student self-regulation, attention, and engagement in the learning environment. Systematically assess and adapt the classroom and learning materials to create a sensory-friendly environment that accommodates diverse auditory, visual, tactile, and movement-based needs of students. Employ a patient, trauma-informed, and understanding approach to interpreting and responding to student behaviors, recognizing that many behaviors are a form of communication or a response to sensory input. Coordinate class and student schedules to ensure students get to where they need to be on time. Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to diverse learning needs. Lead and manage paraprofessionals in the classroom to ensure effective support for all students. Use a variety of techniques to keep the classroom running smoothly and be adaptable to ongoing changes and the evolving needs of students. Collaborate with colleagues, support staff, and families to meet students' individual goals. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, goals, and classroom updates. Participate in recurring staff meetings within and across departments. Attend and actively participate in IEP meetings, providing necessary reports and documentation. Monitor student progress through ongoing tracking, assessment, and feedback. Maintain accurate student records, progress reports, and documentation.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field. Valid teaching certification/licensure in Illinois and LBS1 certification required . Experience working with students in alternative or special education settings strongly preferred. Strong classroom management skills and a student-centered teaching philosophy. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Demonstrated knowledge of diverse sensory processing differences and their impact on learning, behavior, and social-emotional development. Strong observational skills to accurately assess student sensory needs and effectively track the efficacy of sensory-based interventions.
