Position Summary Somerset County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and certified Special Education Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. This role involves providing specialized instruction to students with moderate to severe disabilities, including those on the Autism spectrum. The successful candidate will report to the School Principal with program oversight from the Supervisor of Special Education. We are looking for an educator who excels in behavioral management, individualized instruction, and collaborative advocacy for student success.Key Responsibilities Instructional Leadership:
Design and implement data-driven, sequential instructional plans tailored to individual student needs across various content areas.IEP Management:
Lead the development, writing, and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) using the Maryland Online IEP system, ensuring strict compliance with IDEA federal and state regulations.Behavioral Support:
Utilize evidence-based behavioral techniques and management skills to foster a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.Case Management:
Coordinate and facilitate regular IEP team meetings with parents, service providers (OT/PT/Speech), and administrators to monitor and report student progress.Life Skills & Community Integration:
Plan and execute Community-Based Instruction (CBI) to prepare students for transition into less structured settings and post-secondary opportunities.Supervision:
Direct and mentor assigned paraeducators and instructional assistants to ensure consistent support for all students.Required Qualifications & Skills Education:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Special Education.Certification:
Must hold (or be eligible for) a Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Professional Certificate with a Special Education endorsement.Specialized Training:
Proven experience working with students who are moderately to severely involved; specific experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is highly preferred.Technical Skills:
Proficiency in educational technology and assistive communication devices (AAC) appropriate for students with diverse needs.Assessment:
Knowledge of formal and informal educational assessment techniques and the ability to interpret data for instructional adjustment. Professional Competencies Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Deep understanding of community resources and entry-level career pathways for students with disabilities.
