A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required A. Completed two (2) years study at an institution of higher education; OR B. Obtained at least an associate degree; OR C. Met a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through formal State or local academic assessment knowledge and the ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness as appropriate. ________________________________________________________ ü Has a basic understanding of the educational process and the application of knowledge to assist students. ü Has the ability to relate to students, parents, teachers, and members of the community. ü Has the ability to follow directions, implement plans, and complete tasks in a timely manner. ü Has the ability to work as a team member. ü Demonstrates a good work ethic and has high standards for work performance. ü Is dependable and maintains a good attendance record. ü Has a flexible schedule to accommodate the hours needed within the day. ü Is willing and able to provide personal care and individual support to a student with significant needs. ü Reliable, regular, and punctual on-site attendance is required to perform the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of a Personal Care Aide. Preferred ü Has experience working in a school setting. ü Has the experience supervising students and being responsible for their safety. ü Has experience working with school-age children. ü Has experience working with students with cognitive impairments or other significant special education needs. ü Has experience providing one-to-one student support or personal care. Responsibilities ü Effectively participate in meetings, staffing and other required district and building activities as appropriate. ü Provide individual support to an assigned student throughout the school day under the direction of the teacher. ü Accompany and support the student in classrooms, during transitions, lunch, physical education, arrival and dismissal, and other school activities. ü Assist the student in participating in educational activities and classroom routines as directed by the teacher. ü Provide supervision and assistance necessary to support the student's safety and participation throughout the school day. ü Support appropriate student behavior using positive behavior support strategies consistent with Board Policy, established plans, and staff direction. ü Assist the student in meeting self-help, health, and personal care needs, including toileting, hygiene, feeding, mobility, and other daily living needs as required. ü Assist teachers in preparing materials, record keeping, and data collection relative to student progress. ü Reinforce teacher-directed skills and activities with the student as appropriate. ü Participate in special instructional activities to meet program and student needs, including loading/unloading buses, physical education, lunch, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities. ü Understand and be aware of medical needs of the student and follow established medical protocols under the supervision of appropriate school personnel. ü Maintain confidentiality. ü Follow established policies and procedures regarding student medical concerns, safety, student rights, emergency/disaster plans, and other applicable requirements. ü Assist the student in transitioning between programs, classrooms, and school activities.
