A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.
Description Eliada Homes , a historical fixture within Western North Carolina since 1903, is one Asheville's longest running nonprofits. Our beautiful 300+ acre campus provides a cradle to career continuum of services for over 600 children and youth annually. Child Development staff work with children up to 5 years of age providing them with services which focus on social, emotional, cognitive, and motor development while integrating life-skills into our daily activities and lessons. Eliada Child Development staff qualify for tuition assistance through T.E.A.C.H., and supplemental wages through WAGE$. Early Childhood Lead Teachers assume primary role in designing and implementing activity plans, record-keeping, care and supervision of children in the classroom, communicating with parents and administrative staff, and delegates appropriate duties and responsibilities to teacher and teacher's assistant. What you'll be doing: Write and implement daily/weekly lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate for children in care. Meet children's physical, emotional, and educational needs through close supervision, observation, and supportive one-on-one and group interactions. Assist the Director in creating service plans for children with special needs. Maintain accurate, organized, and up-to-date classroom records and documentation. Communicate with administrative staff to ensure licensing, safety, and sanitation standards are consistently upheld.
Requirements Education/Experience:
Associate's Degree in Early Childhood , or currently enrolled in this program, is required for this position. Comparable degrees include, but not limited to, Psychology, Social Work, and Elementary Education.
