STEM TEACHER & LEARNING FACILITATOR
Part-Time | Jersey City, NJ | Hudson County Science. Engineering. Coding. Math. Robots. Big Questions. Wild Ideas. Things That Don't Exist Yet. What if the child sitting in front of you today is going to design the next medical device? Build a robot no one has imagined yet? Write the algorithm that changes an industry? They begin when a child picks up a circuit and asks, "What happens if I connect this?" When a prototype collapses—and instead of hearing "You did it wrong," they hear: "Great. What did we learn? Let's redesign it." When a student who has never thought of themselves as a scientist suddenly realizes: "Wait...I can do this." That is where you come in.

We're looking for dynamic STEM educators who bring brains, joy, preparation, curiosity, creativity, and serious teaching ability into a room. The teacher who can be standing at a whiteboard explaining an engineering challenge one minute and sitting crisscross applesauce on the floor beside a group of eight-year-olds troubleshooting a robot the next. That means you don't give away every answer before students have had a chance to think. You know how to launch a phenomenon, problem, question, or design challenge that makes students want to know more . You let them investigate. You help them make meaning. Then you give them opportunities to apply what they have learned to something bigger.
YOU DESIGN FOR THE KID WHO LEARNS DIFFERENTLY, TOO.
We are particularly interested in teachers who understand Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and are familiar with neurodiversity and neurodivergence. Not every child learns by sitting quietly and listening. Not every child expresses understanding through writing. Not every child processes information at the same pace. A vibrant STEM classroom makes room for students to: see it; hear it; touch it; build it; talk about it; draw it; model it; code it; test it; explain it; innovate it, and demonstrate what they know in different ways. We want teachers who can maintain high expectations without creating only one road to success .
FAILURE HAS A HOME IN OUR CLASSROOMS.
Engineering and computer science don't work without failure. Code breaks. Circuits don't light. Robots drive directly into walls. Bridges collapse. Measurements are wrong. 3D models don't print the way we expected. And sometimes the thing we were absolutely certain would work... doesn't. Good. That's where engineering begins. Our teachers create psychologically and academically safe learning environments where students understand that a failed prototype is data , debugging is part of computer science, iteration is part of engineering, and asking for help is part of learning. Students should be able to take intellectual risks without fear of humiliation.

This is an important distinction. We are not asking every teacher to know everything about every STEM field. If you are a computer scientist, you might be phenomenal at coding and computational thinking. If you're an engineer, design challenges may be your sweet spot. If you're studying biology, you might transform the way a child thinks about living systems. If mathematics is your world, you may be the person who finally helps a student understand why math actually matters. Bring us your STEM . We'll continue building from there. You must have:
A bachelor's degree in a STEM field OR Be currently enrolled and actively working toward a bachelor's degree in a STEM field. Your bachelor's degree or degree program must be in: Science Mathematics Computer Science Engineering No exceptions. A master's degree or doctorate in a STEM field is a plus , but is not required.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE IS ALSO REQUIRED.
You must have previously worked directly with children in a structured learning environment.
That experience might come from:
a traditional classroom; an independent or charter school; an afterschool program; a summer program; a museum or informal learning environment; a STEM program; a tutoring program; a teaching fellowship; a residency; student teaching; or another substantial instructional setting. We particularly welcome teaching fellows and emerging educators who also meet our STEM-degree requirement .
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATTERS . A
creative classroom does not mean an uncontrolled classroom.
You should know how to:
establish routines quickly; set expectations; transition students between activities; manage materials; redirect behavior without punishment; engage reluctant learners; maintain appropriate boundaries; manage collaborative groups; keep students physically and emotionally safe; and create a learning environment where children can have tremendous fun and still get serious work done .
