Job Description

General Special Education Teacher Job Description Intellectus Preparatory Charter School seeks a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that addresses the individual needs of students with diverse learning abilities. They will be a creative practitioner with a long-term vision and a desire to prepare our scholars with the social awareness, and intellectual capacity to be active in the forward development of their communities. They nurture an emotionally healthy learning environment that will motivate all children in ways that encourage them to welcome challenges in pursuit of high academic goals and to develop into independent, critical, inquisitive, socially aware, and responsive thinking. This educator guides scholars to be active participants in their educational journey and provides opportunities for scholars to use their awareness to contribute positively to their communities. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Curriculum and Planning Provide students with Academic Intervention Services (AIS) designed to help them meet the learning standards in English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science; expertise in Algebra I concepts Educate special education students in the least restrictive environment mandated as per his or her IEP Provide a Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS) Resource Room teacher providing a push in/pull out and small group instruction to students when called for in the IEP Mainstream students when he/she is showing strengths/gains in a particular subject area, revisit IEP and convene with team members to make changes to IEP If available Use of students data in differentiating instruction so teachers may create multiple paths for students of different abilities and different needs to use and present the concept in the daily learning process Provide intervention based on the specific needs of the students as specified in his or her IEP and Student Success Plan. Assess changing student needs and implement plans of improvement Maintain effective and efficient data gathering procedures Provide a positive environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and other professional Attend Sped and IEP meetings Maintain consistent Co-teaching conversations (ongoing Strong knowledge of IEP compliance Required Knowledge Knowledge of differentiated teaching strategies Knowledge of data-driven instructional strategies Knowledge of backwards planning and Universal Design for Learning Knowledge of Co-teaching models Knowledge of SPED data management and its components: Baseline, Anecdotal, Goals, and Growth Knowledge of Accommodations (Level I -RTI protocols) Knowledge of IEP reporting and assessing goals Knowledge of Functional Behavior Assessment write-ups as needed Knowledge of Behavior Intervention Plans meetings and its applications Competencies To perform the job successfully, competitive applicants should demonstrate the following competencies: Demonstrated belief in scholars and IPCS mission Track record of driving results Perseverance in the face of challenges and adaptability Acute attention to detail coupled with the ability to critically think and act strategically Ability to influence and motivate others in adopting preferred instructional approaches Strong organizational abilities and ability to meet deadlines and to share these skill sets with others Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions Desire to work relentlessly in pursuit of our mission High expectations for students and families in low-income communities Willingness to work autonomously, collaboratively, and/or under the direction of senior staff, as needed Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems A hunger for feedback and self-improvement A high level of ownership over the overall outcomes of the scholars they lead Ability to be a bold, tireless, and engaging change agent and culture creator Self-awareness, demonstrating an accurate idea of one's own strengths and weaknesses and an ability to treat all members of the school's community with respect Understanding and knowledge of special education, federal and state level laws and legislation Working knowledge of content and methodology across grade levels Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a "whatever it takes" disposition Committed to creating an anti-racist institution and challenges white supremacy and oppressive practices
Educational Background and Work Experience:
NYS Special Education Certification (1-6 or 7-12) Required Experience in charter school Successful experience working with and/or teaching children in urban middle school grades required Experience with and interest in working with high needs students preferred Demonstrated ability to engage in conversations about anti-racism and culturally responsive practices
