A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Job Description

Reports to: Aspire Adult Education Coordinator and/or
Aspire Director Shift Being Offered:
9:30 - 11:30 at Kent Free Library and/or possible new library Days to work:
M, W, TH
(2.5 hours per day)
Job Objective:
Helping adult students to gain academic skills through the Aspire locator, pre-post TABE test (paper and/or on-line), and IXL (blended learning). Instructional time is given to students to grow in areas of academic deficiency in the classroom or blended learning via IXL. Students then need to pass the practice GED and prepare successfully to take the GED tests at an off-site location. Instructors also assist students in the AWDP work keys assessment process to ready them for their program of choice also offered at Maplewood Career Center in the evenings.
  • All curriculum has been created for program, follow based on student's needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Ohio State Department of Education license/certificate appropriate for position preferred (you will obtain this upon being hired)
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education preferred.
  • A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment (background check upon being hired at Maplewood Career Center)
  • Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
  • Keeps current with technology and other workplace innovations that support job functions.
  • Consistently dependable.

Essential Skills:
  • Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines/procedures. Refers questions about district policies to administrators/supervisors.
  • Assist with the implementation of orientation and registration sessions in accordance with the Ohio Department of Education's O-PAS guidelines if required.
  • Submit timely data for Aspire Program data: orientation paperwork, TABE per and posttest (measurable skill gain of students).
  • Teach small groups and/or tutor students to hone their skills to meet scale score achievements.
  • Comfortable with using technology and willing to learn and utilizes for blended learning.
  • Team player with a positive attitude and a drive to help adult learners achieve their goals.
  • Work with others in a respectful and cooperative manner to achieve our Aspire Goals.
  • Respect personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Strives to develop rapport and serves as a positive role model for others.
  • Participates in staff meetings, completes professional development, maintains cleanliness of teacher classrooms and space.
  • Maintains a professional attitude and appearance. Wear work attire appropriate for the position. Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Attends mandatory staff meetings three/four times a year TBD.
