A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Responsibilities:
Provide one-on-one support to students with disabilities or special needs in the classroom setting. Assist students with activities of daily living, including personal care tasks such as feeding, toileting, and hygiene. Support students in developing and practicing social skills, communication, and behavioral management techniques. Collaborate with classroom teachers and other educational professionals to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and modify curriculum as needed. Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued, respected, and supported. Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teachers and parents/guardians on student performance and behavior. Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times, adhering to established protocols and procedures.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred. Prior experience working with individuals with disabilities or special needs, particularly in a classroom or educational setting, is highly desirable. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, teachers, and parents/guardians. Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with individuals with diverse learning needs. Ability to adapt to changing situations and effectively manage challenging behaviors.
