JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE
Behavior Support Technician FLSA:
Non-Exempt SUMMARY:
The job of the Behavior Support Technician (BST) is to support students and classroom teachers (at each assigned school) by providing behavioral interventions, supporting in crisis situations, implementing de-escalation strategies, and helping students learn appropriate social/emotional skills. The BST is considered a tiered intervention as part of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports, allowing each child to self-regulate their emotions, reduce their anxiety and return to their general education classroom. The BST will implement social-emotional learning activities, collect relevant data/documentation, and assist school staff and Response to Intervention Teams in providing interventions to students. This job reports to the School Principal with training and support provided through the Office of Special Services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support general education classroom teachers by modeling best-practice strategies and techniques related to behavior. Support students exhibiting a lack of self-regulation in the regular classroom, by providing a safe, quiet space with an opportunity to work through the immediate issues involving anxiety, anger and fears in order to return to their classroom. Collect data on all student visits, including frequency, duration and intensity of behaviors and specific interventions utilized as well as the outcome of each intervention. Consult and share data on students with principals, general education teachers, special education staff, District office support staff as well as MTSS team members. Support the students going through the MTSS process to offer "check-in/check-out" with students that may exhibit inappropriate behaviors or lack of social skills to start and end their day with positive and nurturing approaches. Support the school counselor, mental health service providers, school psychologists, teaching staff and administration to provide social-emotional learning activities utilizing Second Step curriculum. Complete essential training related to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and crisis support, including Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), along with any professional development required by the district. Collaborate with all school staff and administration to provide consistent behavior management techniques throughout the school day for each child on the BST's caseload. Work with classroom teachers to develop capacity in the effective use of crisis intervention techniques. Support classroom teachers through observing the child and collecting data in the school setting. Model crisis prevention intervention techniques that offer redirection, lower anxiety, and reduce power struggles (de-escalation). Adhere to the ethical standards and established rules and regulations of Spartanburg School District Two, as well as the state of South Carolina. The employee must be able to become trained in the (CPI) techniques (de-escalation only). The position requires a collection of data on students, meeting deadlines with time constraints, interacting with the public and staff. Must be able to meet demands from several people and communicate effectively. Other duties as assigned.

ABILITIES
are required to assist students with physical health needs, such as toiletry, feeding and/or positioning the student bodily. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with specific, job-related data and utilize specific equipment. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include communicating with diverse groups, establishing effective relationships while maintaining confidentiality, working as part of a team with frequent interruptions.
Responsibility Responsibilities include:

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Extensive experience working with students with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's), trauma, and chronic stress. Experience and/or training in behavior and de-escalation strategies. High school diploma preferred Higher education preferred (2-year degree or bachelor degree)
