Length of position: 189 days SUMMARY The ACCESS Teacher provides instruction to deaf and hard of hearing students who may have additional disabilities. The teacher will assess the knowledge and skills of the students and instruct them in functional academics, independent living skills, community awareness, recreation leisure, and employment readiness. Works collaboratively with the Career and Transition team, Instructional and Residential departments to provide a comprehensive transition experience.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides classroom/community instruction through appropriate and life-applicable learning activities and experiences in the areas of social, physical, intellectual, cultural, and emotional development to deaf/special needs students. Conducts and/or reviews career and transition assessments, surveys, and interviews that guide the students in transition planning including development and/or revision of postsecondary goals and a coordinated set of activities to meet the goals. Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned Implements an instructional and skill development program for assigned students and shows written evidence of preparation as required Provides instruction both on and off-campus in needed skills for independent or supported employment, independent or supported living, accessing community resources, and functional academics. Works cooperatively with the instructional and residential team to regularly modify curricula as needed to assist students in their employment, living, recreation/leisure, and learning goals Works with the Texas Workforce of Commission (TWC) counselor(s), DADS, Travis County Services for the Deaf, and other adult service agencies to facilitate the comprehensive transition needs of each student Conducts assessment of student learning styles and uses results to plan for instructional activities Develops IEPs and presents instruction in alignment with the curriculum and IEPS Uses technology for the teaching/learning process Teaches city bus training by traveling to designated sites on a routine basis. Prepares student progress notes. Promotes self-determination through person-centered planning and student-led ARD meetings. Reinforces independent living skills with appropriate transitional staff. Coordinates with other community-based learning opportunities. Manages student behavior and administers discipline Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities Establishes and maintains open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and other TSD staff. Provides training and follow-up consultation services to teachers and staff on transition-related issues. Keeps abreast of and complies with federal, state, and TSD school regulations and policies for special education teachers. Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents required.QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Valid Texas teaching certificate in the subject and level of assignment and appropriate Special Education or Dear Hard of Hearing Certification. Minimum two years of classroom teaching experience teaching functional life skills with deaf children with autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, significant learning disabilities, or behavior problems.Sign Language:
The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) isADVANCED.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED Experience working with secondary-age students addressing transition topics Knowledge of Medicaid waiver programs Experience coordinating student work activities with employers or other community groups Experience teaching workplace skills Experience with picture symbol communication or developing other visual picture supports Master's degree in special education, deafness, or in a related field.
