Job Description

This position is a 1.0 FTE position located in the Office of Academics at the Syphax Education Center. The holder of this position reports directly to the Supervisor of K-12 Mathematics. The Elementary Mathematics Instructional Specialist collaborates with the Supervisor of K-12 Mathematics, members of the Office of Academics, school staff, and other partners, to develop and disseminate curriculum, instructional, assessment, and professional development resources in the area of elementary mathematics. In addition, the Elementary Mathematics Instructional Specialist supports school-based elementary mathematics coaches and centrally-staffed elementary mathematics interventionists in the execution of their duties. The Elementary Mathematics Instructional Specialist facilitates the collaborative interaction amongst the elementary mathematics coaches and interventionists, to promote effective instructional practices and student achievement in elementary mathematics.
Responsibilities:
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and assessing the school division's elementary mathematics curriculum as aligned with the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning.
  • Support overseeing elementary mathematics initiatives and is responsible for coaching, supporting, and guiding elementary mathematics coaches and interventionists.
  • Represents Arlington Public Schools, the Office of Academics, and the Mathematics Office in a professional manner.
  • Participates in the planning and delivery of professional development to promote best practices in instruction and assessment, which also includes in-person modeling and coaching.
  • Assists with the selection of instructional materials and with the implementation of innovative practices in mathematics.
  • Remains abreast of professional development literature, participates in professional organizations, attends (as appropriate) workshops related to best practices, and effectively disseminates information to others.
  • Assists with monitoring student assessment/test results.
  • Utilizes student-learning data to inform division programming, professional development, and support to local school improvement plans.
  • Initiates and maintains effective liaisons to maintain a current knowledge of developments and research in elementary mathematics.
  • Effectively communicates orally and in written and presentation form with various stakeholder groups.
  • Collaborate within the Office of Academics and across the central office to support system priorities.
  • Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
Experience:
  • Five years of recent successful mathematics teaching and/or coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning & Process Goals, and NCTM Standards of Mathematical Proficiency.
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of the APS elementary mathematics program.
  • Knowledge of and leadership in Professional Learning Communities.
  • Familiarity with the use of the Canvas Learning Management System
  • Familiarity with the use of the Mastery Connect Assessment System.
  • Knowledge of the latest research in mathematics education.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities as a member of a school staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, with professional colleagues, staff, students, and parents.
Qualifications:
  • Possession of or eligible for a Postgraduate Professional Certificate.
  • Possession of or eligible for the
VDOE K-8
Mathematics Specialist Certification
  • Experience with mathematics education leadership at the elementary school level, preferred.
Salary:
Salary based on the 2026-27 T-Scale salary schedule.
