ABOUT THE POSITION A

warm, active family living on a beautiful horse farm in Middleburg, Virginia is seeking an experienced Special Education Teacher or similarly qualified professional to create and lead a personalized homeschool program for their happy, energetic 8-year-old son who is autistic and mostly non-speaking. He communicates successfully through AAC, some spoken words, gestures, pointing, hand-leading, and sign. He is social, active, and enjoys engaging with the people and world around him. He does not have challenging behaviors such as aggression, self-injury, or elopement. This is a unique opportunity for someone with significant autism experience who would enjoy moving beyond a traditional classroom or clinical environment. The family wants his education to combine academics with movement, outdoor learning, community involvement, activities, and real-world experiences. The family's 23-acre horse farm provides an exceptional setting for this approach, with extensive outdoor space, horses, a pool, and areas being developed specifically for additional sensory and recreational activities. The goal is to create a structured but flexible educational program that builds academic skills while also helping him develop communication, independence, confidence, interests, and meaningful connections within his community.

SCHEDULE & DAILY ROUTINE

The typical day will begin with individualized academic instruction in the morning, incorporating appropriate movement and sensory breaks. Early afternoons will focus more heavily on experiential learning and may include community outings, horseback riding, outdoor activities, adaptive fitness, therapy appointments, recreational activities, and other opportunities identified by the educator. The educator will have the autonomy to develop a thoughtful weekly plan while collaborating closely with the parents and the child's existing therapists and specialists. His previous teacher is also committed to helping with the transition and sharing successful strategies, routines, and information that will help the new educator get to know him.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and implement an individualized homeschool curriculum and weekly educational plan Provide one-on-one academic instruction based on the child's abilities, goals, interests, and learning style Incorporate AAC and his other established communication methods throughout the day Create a consistent daily routine while remaining flexible to his individual needs Plan outdoor, community-based, recreational, and experiential learning opportunities Identify activities, hobbies, and experiences that encourage independence, communication, confidence, and skill development Coordinate with speech therapy, music therapy, adaptive fitness, and other providers Incorporate appropriate recommendations from therapists and specialists into the educational program Track progress and adjust teaching strategies and goals as needed Communicate regularly with the parents regarding progress, challenges, observations, and upcoming plans Drive to activities, appointments, and community outings using a provided vehicle

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is an experienced special education professional who genuinely enjoys working with autistic and neurodivergent children and is confident creating an individualized educational program. This person should be energetic, organized, creative, patient, and comfortable taking initiative. Someone who enjoys being outdoors, planning activities, exploring the community, and finding creative ways to teach outside of a traditional classroom will thrive in this position. The family places a high value on building a strong relationship with their son. They are looking for someone who will take the time to understand how he communicates, what motivates him, and what interests him before focusing solely on academic goals. Strong communication and collaboration are also essential, as this person will work closely with the parents and other professionals involved in his development.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a closely related field Master's degree preferred Previous professional experience working directly with autistic children is required Special Education teaching certification strongly preferred Candidates with professional backgrounds in Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Developmental Therapy, Behavior Analysis, Expressive Arts, or a closely related discipline may also be considered Strong understanding of individualized instruction for neurodivergent children Experience with AAC or alternative communication methods strongly preferred Ability to independently develop, organize, and implement an educational program Comfortable incorporating outdoor, community-based, and experiential learning Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills Valid driver's license and clean driving record TRAVEL Travel is not required for this position. However, the family would welcome a candidate who is interested in occasionally joining them for trips or an extended summer vacation, generally for approximately one week at a time. Travel would be arranged in advance with additional compensation for applicable hours, private accommodations, meals, and all travel expenses provided.
