Job Description

Make a meaningful impact supporting students with visual impairments across K-12 settings in the Portsmouth area. Enjoy the flexibility and variety of a full-time contract role for the upcoming academic year, guiding students to access their curriculum and thrive in inclusive environments. As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, youll collaborate with educators, families, and support staff to tailor learning experiences and foster independence for students in multiple schools. This position is perfect for someone passionate about advocacy, innovation in special education, and forming strong student relationships.
Qualifications and Experience:
Valid Virginia Endorsement in Blindness & Visual Impairments (required) Proven background teaching or supporting students with visual impairments, preferably in school settings Knowledge of best practices in accessibility, assistive technology, and differentiated instruction for visually impaired learners Experience developing and implementing IEP goals related to visual impairment Excellent communication and consultation skills with staff and families Adaptable and resourceful team player eager to work with a diverse caseload
Role Responsibilities:
Provide direct specialized instruction and support to K-12 students with visual impairments Assess students functional vision and learning needs Consult with classroom teachers to adapt curriculum, strategies, and materials for accessibility Train school teams on use of assistive technology and tools Contribute to IEP meetings, write reports, and monitor student progress Support transition planning and independent living skill development as needed This full-time contract runs from August 2025 to May 2026, working 37.5 hours per week with placements potentially in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Suffolk.
