A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement in special education. Prior successful elementary teaching experience preferred. Bilingual/Spanish speaking preferred. Experience and/or flexibility to work in a variety of programs including inclusionary models preferred. Demonstrated ability to plan instructional programs to meet needs of diverse learners. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Effective human relations and communications skills with students, parents, staff and community. Knowledge/experience in technology to implement and enhance student learning.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work cooperatively with administrators and staff to develop and implement individualized and meaningful education programs for eligible students. Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team to continually assess student needs and evaluate learning progress. Schedule and conduct conferences with students, parents, staff and outside agencies. Coordinate training and work assignments of instructional assistants. Prepare and maintain reports and other documentation as required. Effectively communicate learning progress with students and parents. Participate in extracurricular programs, activities, meetings and conferences as required.
