Job Description

Position Summary

The Tripoli Community School District is seeking dependable, flexible, and student-focused Substitute Teachers to provide classroom instruction and supervision when regular teachers are absent.

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining established classroom routines, following lesson plans, supervising students, supporting a positive learning environment, and carrying out the responsibilities of the absent teacher in accordance with district policies and procedures.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Teaching license or educational experience preferred but not required, as permitted by Iowa requirements.

Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting preferred.

Ability to follow lesson plans and classroom procedures.

Strong communication and classroom management skills.

Ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and abilities.

Dependable attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct.

Must complete all required district and state requirements for substitute teachers.

Performance Responsibilities

Reports to the Building Principal or school secretary upon arrival at the school building.

Reviews lesson plans, schedules, classroom procedures, and other instructions provided by the regular classroom teacher.

Maintains established classroom routines, procedures, and expectations.

Teaches lessons and supervises learning activities as outlined by the absent teacher.

Provides appropriate assistance and support to students throughout the school day.

Maintains appropriate classroom management and student behavior.

Consults with the Building Principal, classroom teacher, team leader, or other appropriate staff when questions or concerns arise.

Maintains a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment.

Follows all district policies, rules, procedures, and safety requirements.

Maintains confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and school matters.

Reports significant student, classroom, safety, or disciplinary concerns to the appropriate administrator.

Completes a written or electronic report of the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Superintendent.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

Stand and walk for extended periods.

Move throughout the classroom and school building as needed.

Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive movements.

Assist students with routine classroom or school needs as appropriate.

Respond appropriately to student safety concerns and emergencies.

Perform the physical duties necessary to provide appropriate student supervision and classroom instruction.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in classrooms and throughout school buildings.

Regular interaction with students, teachers, administrators, and other school staff.

Work schedule varies based on substitute assignments and district needs.

May work with students of varying ages, abilities, and educational needs.

May involve exposure to noise, illness, physical activity, and potentially stressful situations.

Terms of Employment

The Substitute Teacher position is an as-needed, temporary position. Daily work assignments, compensation, and other terms of employment are established by the Tripoli Community School District Board of Education and applicable district policies and agreements.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required background checks, verification of applicable substitute teaching requirements, and all required district trainings.
