Early Head Start Substitute Teacher Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
: We are building a substitute pool of qualified candidates to provide high-quality comprehensive services that meet all infants' and toddlers' developmental needs and the individual needs of each family. Substitutes in this pool are called upon on an as-needed, day-to-day basis to provide supervision to children ages 6 weeks to age 3 in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substitutes perform activities that ensure the health, safety, development, and creativity of each child, and work with the teaching team to maintain continuity of daily activities in accordance with the Head Start Performance Standards and the Creative Curriculum. Being placed in the substitute pool does not guarantee a set number of hours or days; assignments are offered based on classroom need.
SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE JOB
: Demonstrate knowledge of the Head Start Performance Standards Ensure the health and safety of the children Follow lesson plans and daily routines left by the regular classroom teacher Work with the teaching team to collect and input concrete anecdotal notes for each child into Teaching Strategies as needed Work cooperatively with other staff to assure the individual needs of each child are met as the situation demands Ensure that the classroom is prepared before the children arrive and is properly cleaned/reset after the children depart Provide a learning environment that promotes developmentally appropriate practices and safety Complete required daily documentation (attendance, meal counts, incident reports, etc.) efficiently and on time Respond promptly to substitute call requests and be available on short notice for assigned days Be willing and able to work across different classrooms and age groups as assignments require
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
:
MINIMUM :
HS Diploma or certificate of high school equivalency 90-hour Child Care Certificate At least 1 year of experience working with infants/toddlers and/or preschoolers, or at least 1 year of college (30 semester hours), or a combination of both Able to maintain 12 clock hours of continuing education credits yearly
PREFERRED
All of the above, in addition to the 45-hour Infant & Toddler Certification and/or Infant & Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA), OR Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, or a closely related field
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
The EHS Substitute Teacher must possess personal attributes needed to develop trusting relationships with children and adults.
Such attributes include the following:
Professional in appearance, attitude and ability Respect confidentiality of each child and his/her family Treat children, parents and staff members with dignity and respect Develop a sense of teamwork with co-workers in all activities, including housekeeping, diapering/toilet training, and meal service Practice good and effective communication skills Ability to be flexible in job duties, adapt to different classrooms, and be available on short notice Complete work assignments with integrity and be willing to take initiative
