A Day in the Life A typical day as a Special Education Aide at Cotaco School begins with preparing the classroom alongside the lead teacher — setting up instructional materials, organizing learning stations, and ensuring the physical environment is ready to support diverse learners. Throughout the school day, you'll work side-by-side with students during lessons, providing one-on-one or small group support to reinforce skills and concepts introduced by the teacher. You may assist students with reading exercises, math activities, or other subject-area tasks tailored to their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). During non-instructional periods such as lunch, transitions, or recess, you'll supervise students to ensure their safety and well-being. You'll also assist with assessments and progress monitoring, helping the teacher track student growth and adjust instruction accordingly. Every day brings new challenges and rewarding moments — from watching a student master a new skill to building trusting relationships that help students feel safe and supported in their learning environment. Responsibilities Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and the physical classroom environment to support student learning activities. Support the planning and preparation for group and individual learning activities as directed by the lead teacher or instructional staff. Supervise students during both instructional and non-instructional activities, including transitions, lunch, and recess periods. Deliver enrichment and remedial assistance to students as required, adapting support strategies to meet individual student needs. Assist with testing and evaluation activities to help determine and document student progress toward learning goals. Participate in activities that promote positive interaction and engagement within the instructional process. Communicate regularly with teachers and school staff regarding student behavior, progress, and any concerns that may arise during the school day. Ensure the classroom's physical environment is ready to support students with varying needs. Assist students with subject-area tasks (e.g., reading, math) aligned to their IEPs. Requirements Required ! Highly Qualified Paraprofessional (AL): Must hold or be able to obtain the Alabama Highly Qualified Paraprofessional credential as required by state standards. !

Must complete youth suicide awareness and prevention training in accordance with Alabama law. !

Must complete training related to child sexual abuse awareness and prevention. !

ALSDE Background Check:

Must successfully complete an Alabama State Department of Education background check prior to or upon placement. !

Physical requirement:

Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 65 lbs. !

Professional conduct:

Punctual, professional demeanor and appropriate appearance at all times while on assignment. Preferred Prior experience working with students with special needs, developmental disabilities, or diverse learning profiles in a school or childcare setting. Familiarity with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and experience supporting students in accordance with IEP goals and accommodations. Associate's degree or higher in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field, or equivalent coursework toward paraprofessional certification. Ability to work as part of a collaborative educational team. Flexibility, patience, and a passion for working with children of varying abilities and learning styles. Ability to assist with academic activities, behavioral support, and daily routines. Ability to assist with assessments and progress monitoring, including helping track growth and informing instructional adjustments.
