Are proficient and time effective Enhance community through action Have FUN I. Position Title - Instructional Assistant, Severely Disabled Students (SDS) II. Position Description Under supervision of the School Principal or designee, to assist the special education teachers in the supervision and education of students in severely handicapped programs or to serve students with severe handicaps, birth to 22 years of age; to perform a variety of clerical duties of average difficulty; and to do related work as required. This position is distinguished from the Instructional Assistant-Classroom by assignment to work with the severely disabled students which may include, but will not be limited to, programs for the Autistic, Multi-handicapped, Intellectually Disabled, Emotionally Disturbed, and in classes which serve visually and hearing impaired students. Instructional Assistants in these programs are trained in the special skills needed to handle the special needs of the students. This position is assigned to a classroom setting for either general classroom support or extra support/individualized service. Employees who are assigned to a classroom for extra support/individualized service shall be subject to reassignment based on special education program needs. III. Example of Duties/Responsibilities Assists teacher by working with individuals or groups in the areas of academic, social, and physical skills (E) Physically assists and instructs students in performing activities such as moving about, using bathroom facilities, eating, toileting, dressing, maintaining body hygiene, or other activities as assigned (E) Assists students during meals by setting up tables or transporting lunch trays and feeding as required (E) Assists teacher in educating students in domestic and/or simple vocational related tasks (E) Positions and repositions students to stimulate development or relieve or prevent improper pressure (E) May physically restrain students as necessary using District-approved techniques (E) Provides continuous supervision of students in classrooms, cafeteria, on grounds, at bus loading zones, on field trips, and in other school site areas as assigned; maintains discipline (E) Supervises and attends to students on buses as they are being transported to and from school or on special activity trips during the day (E) Performs routine clerical tasks such as correcting papers; recording grades; administering make-up tests; preparing and duplicating instructional materials; keeping attendance records; issuing, collecting, and maintaining classroom supplies; and preparing instructional materials such as charts, bulletin boards, and displays Performs related duties as assigned (E) - Essential IV.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of:
Proper hygiene practices and procedures Safety practices and procedures Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Operation of standard office equipment Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and parents Understand the needs of exceptional students Physically lift and handle students in caring for their personal needs, i.e., toileting, aiding with bladder and bowel apparatus, removing and replacing braces, etc. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions Supervise students in the classroom and out of doors Perform general clerical tasks Learn and utilize new and current technologies Perform work safely
Education and Experience:
Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Completion of post high school courses in Psychology or Special Education is desirable
AND Experience:
Job related experience working with children with exceptional needs is desirable

Move students in and out of wheelchairs Must be able to diaper and provide toilet assistance to students of all ages Visual acuity to monitor students in all instructional settings both on and off the school campus Hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide assistance to students Bending at the waist for prolonged periods of time Walking and standing for extended periods of time Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate other adaptive equipment and classroom instructional materials Gripping and grasping Reaching overhead, above shoulders, and horizontally Lifting, squatting, kneeling, twisting Heavy work - occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to approximately 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 50 pounds Hazards Exposed to bodily fluids and waste materials Exposure to fumes from the use of cleaning products and disinfectants
