Organizational Overview:
Under the supervision of the special education/classroom teacher, performs tasks to aid in the teaching of special education and general education. Duties may vary according to specific type of special education class. o When assigned to a special education class aide will work with students who may have emotional, educational or behavioral problems. o When assigned to a severely handicapped special education class, aide may work with students who have severe physical, emotional, educational or behavioral problems. o Where the special education program is included in the regular classroom, the aide will work with special education and regular education students, as well as the regular and special education teachers.
Representative Duties and Responsibilities:
(Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:) o Assists in the preparation and distribution of materials o Reinforces classroom teacher's lessons using related audio visual and general office equipment o Works individually or with small groups of students under the direction of the teacher o Corrects student papers according to established guidelines o Tabulates and records student grades o Assists in administering standard testing programs o Attends staff meetings and inservice training as required o Assists with yard supervision for special education students as needed and with physical education, field trips and off-campus work programs. o Supervises student TA's and students involved in special programs within the classroom
Qualifications:
o Interest in helping elementary and middle school students to improve their academic, social and communication skills o Fundamental understanding of English and general education. o Experience working with students in a special education setting is desired. o Experience working with students in a classroom, daycare, playground or group setting is helpful.
Ability to:
o Relate to children and work cooperatively with other staff, parents and school community members in the course of daily responsibilities o Maintain the highest level of confidentiality in all matters relating to students o Understand and follow oral and written instructions o Communicate clearly to students, staff and parents o Operate required audio visual and general office equipment o Use clerical and computer skills as required in the specific classroom setting.
