Job Goal:
Responsible for providing support and assistance to a specific special education student(s) in attainment of IEP goals and educational objectives. The paraeducator works with and at the direction of the building administration, special education and/or regular education teachers and related service professionals. Develops and promotes good community relations among various community on behalf of the assigned student's needs and school goals.
Job Qualifications:
Paraeducator permit required: Completed at least two years of study at an institution or higher learning; OR Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; OR Demonstrated, through a state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing and mathematics. The Department of Education defines "two years of study" as the successful completion of 60 semester hours of college coursework at an accredited institution of higher learning, ideally in the general and educational studies, including reading, writing and mathematics, content and pedagogy. Cooperative attitude and strong work ethic for performing in a team-oriented work environment. Previous positive experience(s) in working with children. Knowledge of how to assist children with learning activities, including the use of a computer.
NOTE :
For this position, the person must be able to perform very heavy work. This means the ability to exert 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. They will be required to possibly support the weight of a student to prevent them from falling and includes the supervision of the child during toileting activities.
Essential Functions:
Attend to the needs of the student which has necessitated the assignment of a one-on-one aide (i.e. instructional, behavior support, personal hygiene assistance, etc) Assist with specific activities (i.e. toileting, diapering, bus transition, etc.) with frequency as is necessary. Assists in a variety of instructional and other related activities with an individual student as assigned by the administration/teacher. Works closely with the teacher to make sure that the student is progressing towards the educational goals for student achievement as established. Assists the teacher in establishing and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning. Assists in the supervision, monitoring and personal support of students through assigned duties, i.e. hallways, lunchroom and bus duty; ensures appropriate conduct during these periods. Participates in district/school/departmental meetings as deemed appropriate. Assists student(s) with disabilities in meeting their physical needs in order to benefit from the educational program. Responsibilities will include lifting, toileting, positioning, transferring and feeding and the physical assistance of a student in the case of any emergency situation. Monitors activities and behavior of children to ensure their physical and environmental safe keeping, as well as adherence to appropriate conduct and disciplinary controls. Assists teachers in checking and objectively evaluating progress; assists children with support to the educational process individually and in small groups reinforcing skills based upon instructional guidelines. Attend professional development activities as deemed appropriate. Acts as a positive role model for students through appropriate personal conduct and professional attire.
