A Teacher Assistant assists classroom teachers by providing extra individual attention and instruction to students. Helps teachers with recordkeeping, preparation for lessons and activities and supervising students. May work with special education students, or work in a school library or computer lab; may be called teacher aide or paraprofessional.
We are seeking a passionate, patient, and observant Elementary Montessori Assistant to join our dynamic mixed-age elementary classroom (ages 6-12). In the Montessori tradition, the Assistant works closely with the Lead Guide to create a nurturing, prepared environment that supports each child's natural development, independence, and love of learning. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative setting, values child-led exploration, and is committed to fostering respect, responsibility, and community within a multi-age group. The Assistant helps maintain the calm, orderly atmosphere essential to Montessori practice while providing individualized support to students across the full elementary curriculum.
Key Responsibilities Support Classroom Operations:
Assist in preparing and maintaining the Montessori learning environment, including materials, shelves, and classroom spaces to ensure they are inviting, orderly, and accessible to children of varying ages and abilities.
Individual and Small-Group Guidance:
Work alongside the Lead Guide to observe children, offer lessons when appropriate, and provide gentle redirection or support as needed. Help students with research, projects, and practical life activities.
Record Keeping and Observation:
Contribute to ongoing observation notes, student progress records, and communication with families under the direction of the Lead Guide.
Community Building:
Model grace, courtesy, and respectful interactions. Help facilitate class meetings, conflict resolution, and collaborative work that builds a strong classroom community.
Practical Support:
Supervise recess/outdoor time, assist with snack/lunch routines, and support transitions throughout the day. Help manage classroom routines and procedures.
Material Management:
Repair, replenish, and organize Montessori materials. Assist in creating or adapting supplementary materials when needed.
Parent/Family Engagement:
Participate in parent education events, conferences, and communications as directed by the Lead Guide.
Professional Growth:
Engage in ongoing professional development, staff meetings, and self-reflection consistent with Montessori philosophy.
Qualifications Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree (preferred) or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Montessori training or certification (Elementary level preferred; AMI, AMS, or equivalent) is a strong plus. Willingness to pursue training is welcome. Previous experience working with children ages 6-12 in a Montessori or progressive educational setting is highly desirable.
