Under general direction, the Recreation Program Assistant supports the implementation of recreation programs, with a primary focus on youth athletics and the ability to assist with a variety of other programs based on community needs. This position assists with program instruction, supervision of participants and overall program operations while helping maintain a safe, organized and engaging environment. This position may be filled as a regular part-time or seasonal position depending on program needs. Hours and duration of employment may vary based on seasonal programming demands. Work schedules vary based on programming needs and may include weekday mornings and afternoons, evenings and weekends. Carry out the day-to-day curriculum, activities, and operational responsibilities for assigned recreation programs. Supervise participants and promote compliance with established program rules and safety procedures. Communicate with participants, parents, coworkers, and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner. Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment for program participants. Assist with the setup, takedown, and appropriate use of facilities, equipment, and program supplies. Monitor program areas and promptly report injuries, incidents, behavioral concerns, equipment problems, or facility concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Follow established City and Recreation Department policies and procedures. Follow direction and guidance from the Program Supervisor and Recreation Supervisor. Report reliably and punctually to assigned program locations. Perform other related duties consistent with the position as assigned. Basketball Scorekeeper Assignment Program Assistants assigned to basketball scorekeeping support recreational youth and adult basketball leagues. These assignments primarily occur on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday evenings from October through March. Hours vary based on team registrations, league schedules, and operational needs. Scorekeeping responsibilities include : Operate the game clock and maintain the official scorebook. Accurately record scores, fouls, timeouts, player participation, and other required game information. Understand and follow league procedures related to game timing, scoring, substitutions, and player eligibility. Coordinate with game officials to confirm scoring and timing information. Complete required scoring documents and submit final game results to the supervisor. Remain attentive throughout each assigned game. Communicate professionally with players, coaches, officials, spectators, and City staff. Observe participant and spectator conduct and promptly report concerns to game officials or the supervisor. Document and report incidents, protests, ejections, injuries, equipment problems, and facility concerns. Help maintain a safe, respectful, and sportsmanlike environment. Respond to routine questions and refer officiating decisions, disputes, and significant concerns to game officials or the supervisor. Maintain neutrality and refrain from interfering with decisions made by game officials. Assist with setting up and putting away scorekeeping equipment, tables, benches, and related supplies. Scorekeepers do not make officiating decisions, impose penalties, rule on protests, or physically intervene in conflicts. Experience working with youth or adults in recreation, education, childcare, athletics, or a similar setting is preferred. Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with participants, parents, coworkers, and members of the public. Sound judgment and professionalism when responding to questions, disagreements, behavioral concerns, or unexpected situations. Dependability and punctuality in reporting to assigned program locations. Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in an active environment. Qualifications sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Basketball Scorekeeper Qualifications Candidates assigned to basketball scorekeeping should possess: Working knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, terminology, scoring procedures, and game-clock operations. Previous basketball experience as a participant, coach, official, or scorekeeper, or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge and experience. Accuracy and attention to detail when operating the game clock and maintaining the official scorebook. A calm, impartial, and professional approach in a fast-paced gymnasium environment. Availability for assigned evening and weekend games. Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements Must possess a valid Iowa driver's license and maintain reliable transportation. Must be functionally literate in written and spoken English. The position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds, and to operate program and recreational equipment in a variety of physical and environmental conditions. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with varying noise levels and weather conditions. Visual and auditory ability must be sufficient to supervise participants, ensure safety and operate standard equipment.
