Pathway to meeting competency review requirement for Massachusetts PreK-2 Moderate Disability License (1 vacancy) PreK-8 Moderate Disability License (1 vacancy) Severe Disability License (1 vacancy)

Dates/Hours:

Exact dates to be determined. As part of the district's support of Special Education licensure requirements, a 150-hour field-based internship process has been developed. This process will allow candidates seeking to add an Initial or Professional license, or candidates seeking a Provisional license, to demonstrate competency in subject matter knowledge requirements during a field experience. Supervising Educators will be hired to provide the licensure candidate guidance and support throughout the process. Supervisory Educators will be asked to give feedback to the licensure candidate about their demonstration of the subject matter knowledge requirements. The Supervising Educator will guide the licensure candidate through a variety of field-based experiences that include integral components of any programs for the preparation of educators.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.Holds MA license sought by candidate

  • Initial or Professional 2.

Must have at least 3 full years of experience under that license 3.Experience with mentoring educators, preferred, but not required 4.Must have a minimum rating of proficient 5.Demonstrated skills in communication, organization, and lesson plan preparation, including accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities 6.Must have the PreK-2 moderate license or PreK-8 moderate license or a Severe license In order to serve in the role, the Supervising Educator must be willing to provide ongoing modeling, instruction, and support to the candidate. The Supervising Educator must also conduct an evaluation of the candidate's competency. The process is formalized through 3 meetings: initial, formative, and summative.

Responsibilities:

1.Meet one-one-one with assigned participants routinely during the process to provide feedback and guidance. 2.Identify and review sources of evidence to determine competency. 3.Coordinate and schedule the three required meetings, to include the Supervising Educator, the Licensure Candidate, and the Supervising Administrator, and obtain all necessary signatures. 4.Provide targeted feedback to the candidate throughout the process regarding progress and areas of continued growth. 5.Use the DESE designed performance rubric to support the candidate. 6.Collect evidence by observing practice, examining work products and student work, reviewing the resource guide, talking with the candidate, and reviewing collected evidence. 7.Provide a holistic evaluation of the candidate's demonstrated skills across the indicators to determine Proficient readiness. 8.Clearly communicate expectations and due dates to participant. 9.Conduct thoughtful conversations throughout the process. 10.Provide participants with appropriate support in collecting evidence. 11.Communicate participant meeting attendance and feedback to the designated Administrator.
