NA Position Summary Corner Co-op Nursery School is seeking an Assistant Director-Teacher to join our community. This is a part-time or full-time teaching and leadership position that combines classroom responsibilities with administrative and operational support for Corner Co-op. This role serves as the second-in-command to the Director and helps ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the school community. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director, teaching staff, and families to support a high-quality early childhood program grounded in cooperative values, strong communication, and child-centered learning. In the Director's absence, the Assistant Director assumes leadership responsibility for school operations, staff support, and family communication.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Teaching & Classroom Leadership Serve as a classroom teacher Foster a safe, nurturing, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment Support children's social-emotional, cognitive, physical, and language development Observe and document children's progress and communicate effectively with families Collaborate with co-teachers to maintain strong classroom practices Model positive guidance and effective classroom management strategies Administrative & Operational Support Assist the Director with daily school operations and administrative tasks Work with the director to hire and onboard new staff as needed Help coordinate staff schedules, classroom coverage, and substitute arrangements Send a weekly email to teachers with updates and changes for the week, including teacher subs, children switching days, dropping in, absences, etc. Assist with maintaining licensing compliance, health and safety procedures, and school records With the administrator, ensure staff and child records and up to date Review safety and health policies with teachers at monthly staff meetings Organize and log fire drills and other emergency drills on a monthly basis and provide feedback to teachers Participate in policy implementation and operational planning Work with the Board of Directors to revise and update Bylaws, Handbook, and other policies and procedures as necessary Help organize school events, parent education opportunities, and cooperative activities Help to lead new family orientation Gather suggestions of topics from families for parent-staff workshops Work with the Board of Directors to ensure suggestions from families are being heard and acted upon as appropriate Work with the Board of Directors to ensure families understand family job responsibilities, suggest new jobs as appropriate Support communication between staff, families, and the Board or parent committees as applicable Ensure the school is in compliance with EEC regulations and requirements and manage the relicensing process every two years. Manage and maintain the school's insurance policies and related documentation, including coordinating renewals and communicating with insurance providers as needed. Assist with the development, monitoring, and ongoing management of the school budget. Work with parent volunteers to manage the school's social media presence and support communications that promote the preschool and its community. Work with parent volunteers to coordinate and maintain the schedule for parent classroom helpers, ensuring appropriate coverage and communication with participating families. Plan and coordinate alumni and community reunions and other designated special events. Develop, maintain, and regularly review the school's emergency preparedness plans, and assist with coordinating related drills, procedures, and communications. Leadership & Staff Support Serve as a resource and mentor for teaching staff Coordinate teacher training and professional development, including identifying relevant opportunities, maintaining required training records, and supporting staff growth and ongoing learning. Participate in staff meetings and leadership planning Assist with conflict resolution and problem-solving as needed Promote a collaborative, respectful, and community-oriented culture Acting Director Responsibilities In the Director's absence, the Assistant Director may: Oversee daily school operations Serve as the primary point of contact for families and staff Address urgent operational or staffing issues Ensure continuity of school policies, procedures, and communication Represent the school professionally with families, vendors, and community partners Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred Minimum of 3-5 years of preschool teaching experience Previous leadership, supervisory, or administrative experience preferred Strong understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practice Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills Ability to balance classroom teaching with administrative responsibilities Commitment to cooperative education principles and family engagement CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) Desired Qualities Warm, collaborative, and approachable leadership style Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities Flexibility and initiative in a dynamic school environment Ability to build trusting relationships with children, families, and staff Commitment to inclusion, equity, and community-building Interest in leadership and growth opportunities within the Corner Co-op
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily inside the School, however there is likely outside exposure as well to varying temperatures and weather conditions from heat, cold, windy, rain and snow.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, grasping and finger dexterity, repetitive motions. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds Sitting approximately 20 percent of the time. Standing approximately 40 percent of the time. Walking approximately 40 percent of the time. Up to 50 pounds of force infrequently to lift or otherwise move objects.
VISION REQUIREMENTS
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Compensation ranges from $35-40 per hour depending on experience and qualifications. Health insurance will be offered for employees working more than 30 hours per week.
