Job Description:
POSITION
Full-Time Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning (Assistant Director): Center for Adult Education; Lawrence Campus (45 Franklin Street); 37.5 hours per week; Non-Unit Professional Position. This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon the availability of funding. Continuation of the position is dependent on ongoing grant support and may be subject to termination if funding is reduced or discontinued.
SUMMARY:
The Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning at the Center for Adult Education (CAE) plays a pivotal role in fostering high-quality instruction across all programs. This position centers on elevating teaching and learning through thoughtful supervision, embedded professional development, and data-informed instructional leadership. With a strong foundation in adult learning theory and a commitment to educational equity, the Assistant Director supports instructors, builds capacity across the team, and ensures alignment with funder expectations and student needs. They are a collaborative and proactive leader. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator who is passionate about adult learners and committed to continuous improvement in teaching practices, student outcomes, and team culture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Lead all teaching and learning activities across the program, ensuring alignment with instructional goals, standards, and student needs. Provide strategic leadership for curriculum development and ensure program alignment with funder and state requirements. Model inclusive leadership and promote equitable, culturally responsive teaching practices. Foster a collaborative team culture grounded in trust, reflection, and continuous growth-for both staff and self. Supervise hiring and onboarding of instructional staff, providing clear expectations, resources, and mentorship. Conduct regular classroom visits to offer coaching, observe instruction, and provide strengths-based feedback. Lead formal evaluations focused on reflection, growth, and instructional improvement. Refer instructors to relevant professional development and facilitate training that supports inclusive, student-centered teaching. Collaborate with teachers to develop, adapt, and revise curriculum aligned with standards and student needs. Guide the selection and effective use of instructional materials, including textbooks, software, and classroom technology. Support assessment practices and help instructors use test results (e.g., MAPT, TABE
CLAS-E, CASAS, BEST
Plus) to inform instruction. Use student data-attendance, performance, outcomes-to evaluate and improve instructional practices. Advocate for students and help reduce barriers to access, persistence, and achievement. Support the integration of digital literacy, career readiness, and employability skills into instruction. Oversee and support advisors and staff to ensure accurate student placement and successful progression through programs. Oversee the organization and use of instructional resources to support effective teaching and learning. Partner with the Data Specialist to maintain accurate LACES records and meet reporting and compliance requirements. Contribute to long-range planning, grant development, and the design of new programming. Support outreach efforts that reflect CAE's mission and connect with the wider community and college. Stay current with research and best practices in adult education, language learning, and educational equity. Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Education, TESOL, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Three (3) years of experience in instructional leadership, teacher supervision, or program management. Strong understanding of adult education instructional methods and programming. Familiarity with ESOL and HSE content standards, Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Speakers of Other Languages, Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Basic Education, and Massachusetts Policies for Effective Adult Education. Strong communication, coaching, and team-building skills. Demonstrated ability to lead and support a diverse instructional team. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and remote collaboration tools.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Education, TESOL, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. Experience working in a DESE-funded adult education program. Familiarity with LACES, Banner, and Destiny One systems. Experience applying culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices in educational settings.

SALARY:
Anticipated starting salary range is $80,000.00 - $86,000.00 annually with complete fringe benefit package including competitive health insurance, dental insurance, basic life insurance, long-term disability insurance, paid sick, vacation and personal leave, educational benefits for employee/spouse/dependents, and excellent retirement benefits. Official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
