Job Overview Elementary Assistant Job Description The role of an Assistant in a Montessori classroom is to support the Lead Teacher in creating and facilitating a joyful and peaceful learning environment for children. This includes modeling loving and respectful behavior; helping children gain independence; attentive observation of children's interests, activities and skills; sharing observations with Lead Teacher; and helping maintain a beautiful and well-prepared physical learning environment. Outline of Assistant Responsibilities 1. Guide children at the direction of the Lead Teacher Assist students needing support in choosing and pursuing relevant work from their personalized lessons/curriculum lists. Aid students in problem-solving when minor questions about their work arise Redirect unpurposeful or disruptive behavior using gentle techniques and positive phrasing Offer one-on-one support for a student needing specific, direct aid, at the direction of the Lead Teacher 2. Organize, stock and clean classroom Support Lead Teacher with any material creation needed Perform bleaching and sanitation tasks as needed (before/after lunch, end of the day, etc.) Support children with their end-of-day chores as needed 3. Provide attentive supervision, indoors and out Stand within eyesight and ear shot of children's activity, particularly of groups of activity or of a child or children who need extra support Maintain communication with the Lead teacher and administrator about socio-emotional observations and possible dynamics 4. Provide support to specialist teachers (PE, art, music, etc.) Help ensure students are being attentive and respectful Offer support to any individuals with minor needs (toilet, bandaid, etc.) Carry the Classroom Emergency Backpack whenever off-site, including a first-aid kit and student medical permissions If you are enthusiastic about supporting human development in a non-traditional, Christian Montessori environment, have excellent communication and observation skills, and have a team-player attitude, this jobs for you!
