FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
The Educational Interpreter- Braillist performs specialized interpreting services for the students with visual impairments in the school system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Transcribes all materials used in classroom or assemblies into Braille for use by the student with a visual impairment. Teaches student the Braille symbols and how to operate the transcribing machine. May score/correct the student's work done in Braille. Prepares printed copies of student work for the teacher(s) and parent(s). Accompanies students on field trips, to historical events, and social in order to provide interpretive services. Tutors students in class and after school. Communicates and works with faculty in providing instructions and helping students prepare for class. Keeps necessary records and reports on services provided. Performs related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of or the willingness to become knowledgeable about Braille language and how to communicate with students through this medium. General knowledge of the subject matter assigned for ease of communication and interpretation for the student. Ability to learn about and interest in students with visual impairments Willingness to adapt schedule for the student in order to provide these special services. Ability to communicate in oral and written forms. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with these special students, parents, faculty, staff, and the general public.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum:
Associates Degree in relevant field or High School Diploma/GED plus two years' relevant work experience. Must complete a Braillist certification within one (1) year of hire. Pay Grade 61- $2,838.63 Monthly Salary
