The Babysitting Program Assistant supports the daily operation of the Joseph's House Resident Voluntary Babysitting Program. The Assistant works directly with children and volunteer babysitters to provide a safe, welcoming, organized, and engaging environment for children who reside at Joseph's House. Working under the direction of the Director of Resident Babysitting, the Assistant provides direct babysitting, supports volunteers, helps maintain the babysitting space, and assists with the daily administrative needs of the program.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Babysitting & Child Supervision Provide active supervision and basic babysitting for participating children. Engage children in age-appropriate activities including reading, crafts, games, music, and free play. Provide appropriate comfort and assistance with feeding, bottles, diapering, and toileting as needed. Use positive redirection and appropriate behavior-management techniques. Follow Joseph's House procedures related to infant safe sleep, illness, injuries, emergencies, and child safety. Seek assistance whenever a child's needs exceed what can safely be managed through ordinary babysitting. Volunteer & Program Support Welcome and assist volunteer babysitters during their scheduled shifts. Help volunteers understand daily routines, child needs, activities, and program expectations. Assist the Director with volunteer schedules, communications, and coverage as needed. Help with child check-in/check-out and daily attendance records. Communicate concerns regarding children, residents, volunteers, or program operations to the Director. Babysitting Space Prepare and reset the babysitting space for daily use. Clean and sanitize toys, surfaces, changing areas, and equipment as appropriate. Organize toys, books, crafts, games, and supplies. Monitor supplies and report items that need to be purchased, replaced, or removed from use. Assist with routine room safety checks. Policies & Teamwork Follow the Resident Voluntary Babysitting Program policies and procedures and applicable Diocese of Syracuse Safe Environment requirements. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality. Immediately report injuries, significant behavioral concerns, safety issues, or suspected abuse or neglect according to Joseph's House procedures. Work collaboratively with the Director, volunteers, resident mothers, and other Joseph's House staff. Perform other duties reasonably related to the position and mission of Joseph's House.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience caring for infants and young children preferred. Dependable, organized, patient, and attentive to child safety. Ability to communicate respectfully with children, residents, volunteers, and staff. Ability to follow established procedures and maintain confidentiality. Successful completion of required Diocese of Syracuse Safe Environment training and background screening. First Aid/CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
