Primary Job Function The 1:1 Specialized Paraprofessional provides dedicated, individualized support to a specific student with intensive academic, behavioral, and student-specific health or medical needs. Under the guidance of licensed teachers, Intervention Specialists, BCBAs, and the Licensed School Nurse, the 1:1 Paraprofessional ensures student safety across all settings (including classroom, school grounds, clinic, and bus transit), implements individualized academic, behavioral, and health care plans (IEP/BIP/IHCP), collects data on progress, and facilitates the student's inclusion in the school community while promoting independence and self-advocacy. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Valid State of Ohio Educational Aide Permit. Valid ESEA (Highly Qualified) credential (requires Associate Degree, 48+ semester hours, or a passing score of 456+ on the ParaPro Assessment within 60 days of hire or transfer). Valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Successful completion of Medication Administration and Bloodborne Pathogens training. Current credential as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Direct Support Professional (DSP), or documented equivalent pediatric healthcare/medical caregiving experience. criminal background checks as required by Ohio law. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting students with complex physical, behavioral, social-emotional, or special education needs. Credentials or training as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) or in state-approved crisis management systems (e.g., CPI, Safety-Care, PCM). Proficiency in student health recording and documentation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities1. Individualized Instructional & Behavioral Support Provides constant 1:1 supervision and support to the assigned student throughout the school day, including transitions, lunch, electives, specials, and bus transportation to and from school as assigned. Implements the student's IEP and BIP with high fidelity under the supervision of licensed staff. Collects and records precise, student-specific behavioral, academic, and care data to assist the BCBA, Intervention Specialist, or School Nurse in monitoring progress. Scaffolds, modifies, and adapts classroom assignments in real time to meet the student's specific learning, sensory, and physical needs. 2. 1:1 Safety, Transportation & Crisis Intervention Accompanies assigned student on daily bus routes to and from school as needed, ensuring student safety, mobility support, behavioral intervention, and specialized health monitoring during transit. Maintains continuous line-of-sight or proximity as required by the student's safety plan, health plan, and transportation directives. Intervenes during behavioral crises using approved non-violent de-escalation strategies to protect the student and others. Acts as the primary support during emergency drills, clinic visits, and transportation emergencies, ensuring the student understands and follows safety procedures. 3. Student-Specific Health Care & Delegated Medical Support Delegated clinical procedures are performed only after completing student-specific training and under the supervision or delegation of the Licensed School Nurse in accordance with Ohio law (OAC 4723-13). Specific health tasks assigned to this role (based on student

) may include:

Enteral Nutrition Care:

Administration of tube feedings (G-tube / J-tube), site care, line flushing, and pump/gravity feed monitoring.

Medication Administration:

Accurate administration and documentation of daily or emergency prescription (Rx) and over-the-counter (OTC) medications as delegated. Respiratory /

Airway Support:

Tracheostomy monitoring, oral/nasal suctioning, oxygen monitoring, or nebulizer treatment support.

Elimination & Toileting Care:

Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), ostomy care, specialized diapering, or bowel/bladder management programs.

Seizure Management:

Monitoring for seizure activity, executing emergency protocol, timing episodes, and assisting with emergency medication administration.

Specialized Mobility & Positioning:

Transfers using specialized equipment (e.g., Hoyer lift, stander), repositioning protocols, and wheelchair routing. 4. General Personal Care Duties Assists the student with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including hygiene, feeding assistance, and specialized dressing needs while maintaining dignity. Operates, cleans, and maintains the student's adaptive or specialized medical equipment (e.g., communication devices, wheelchairs, specialized bus harnesses, feeding pumps). Monitors for medical triggers, physical distress, or changes in condition, immediately notifying the Licensed School Nurse and classroom teacher.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:

Basic pediatric clinical care procedures; Ohio Nurse Practice Act delegation rules regarding unlicensed assistive personnel (OAC 4723-13); Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and special education best practices; IEPs, BIPs, and IHCPs;

FERPA/HIPAA

confidentiality requirements.

Skilled in:

Executing delegated health protocols accurately following formal nurse training; observing, documenting, and reporting student medical/behavioral status; conflict resolution and non-violent de-escalation; effective communication with multidisciplinary teams and families.

Ability to:

Perform clinical and personal care procedures with care, cleanliness, and dignity; maintain accurate health logs and data sheets; supervise students effectively across school environments and transit; respond calmly to complex medical needs or challenging behaviors.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions Physical Demands:

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and transitioning rapidly from floor to standing position. Ability to safely assist students with embarking/disembarking transport and securing restraints. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally (e.g., student transfers, positioning equipment). Manual dexterity required for medical equipment management.

Working Conditions:

Direct daily contact with an individual student with specialized medical/behavioral needs. Regular exposure to blood or bodily fluids requiring standard precautions and PPE. Daily travel on school buses or specialized transportation vehicles during morning and afternoon routes as assigned.
