GENERAL PURPOSE
Summary:
The Preschool Licensed Practical Nurse/Paraprofessional position is a unique role that combines nursing duties with instructional support responsibilities in the Integrated Special Education Preschool Program. This individual will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or certified school nurse-teacher, alongside classroom teachers and paraprofessionals, to provide nursing care and assistance to students as required, while also serving as an instructional aide when no acute nursing care is needed.
PRIMARY NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
? Administer prescribed medication per physician orders via oral, G-tube, injection, and/or nebulizer routes, under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) ? Provide nursing treatments such as catheterization, wound care, and diabetes management, consistent with the student's established plan of care and under RN supervision ? Monitor students with chronic health conditions (e.g., seizures, asthma, allergies) and report changes in status to the supervising RN ? Assist with vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other mandated health screenings as delegated by the supervising RN ? Maintain accurate and compliant medical records consistent with LPN scope of practice and district nursing documentation standards ? Assist in providing health education and training to staff on student-specific medical conditions, treatments, and emergency protocols, under RN guidance ? Respond to illness, injuries, and medical emergencies following established nursing protocols and district emergency procedures
PRIMARY PARAPROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
? Assist lead special education and general education teachers in implementing IEP/lesson plans ? Provide individualized academic, behavioral, and self-care support for students with IEPs ? Facilitate inclusion by supporting students' active participation in general education activities ? Gather data and document progress toward IEP goals across multiple settings ? Prepare adapted materials and assistive technology per student needs ? Implement applied behavior analysis strategies and positive behavior supports ? Supervise and facilitate peer interactions during classroom activities, meals, and recess
QUALIFICATIONS
? Completion of a Rhode Island Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education-approved Practical Nursing program (diploma or certificate) ? Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing in the State of Rhode Island ? Minimum 1 to 2 years of pediatric or school nursing experience preferred ? Ability to perform delegated nursing tasks under the supervision of a licensed RN or physician, consistent with Rhode Island Board of Nursing regulations ? Knowledge of federal/state laws and regulations for special education ? Experience working with students with disabilities ? Excellent written/verbal communication skills ? CPR/AED/First Aid certified ? Mandatory de-escalation and physical intervention training This split role allows an experienced Pediatric Licensed Practical Nurse to utilize their clinical skills while also directly supporting the learning and inclusion of preschool students with disabilities and special needs in the classroom. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with young children with diverse needs, the ability to transition seamlessly between the nursing and instructional roles, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care and education.
