Job Description

A Tennessee public school preschool teaching assistant (or paraprofessional) supports the lead teacher in fostering a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children under age 5. They assist with implementing lesson plans, managing classroom behavior, providing one-on-one student attention, and overseeing daily routines like snacks and hygiene
Key Responsibilities Classroom Support:
Assist in implementing daily lesson plans, organizing materials, setting up learning centers, and managing classroom flow.
Instructional Assistance:
Work with children individually or in small groups to reinforce lessons on letters, numbers, shapes, and social skills.
SupervisionSafety:
Ensure the safety of children on the playground, during activities, and in the classroom to prevent injury.
Behavior Management:
Guide children in social-emotional development, encouraging positive interactions and helping with conflict resolution.
Personal Care:
Assist children with self-help skills, including toileting, feeding, and dressing.
Documentation:
Assist in observing, recording, and reporting on student progress and developmental milestones RequirementsQualifications in
TN Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, with many roles preferring or requiring at least an Associate's degree or two years of college. "Highly Qualified"
Status:
For positions in Title I schools, assistants must meet federal standards, which include an Associate's degree or passing a state/local academic assessment (e.g., ParaPro test).
Certifications:
Possession of a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential is often preferred or required
Work Environment Hours:
Generally, 10-month contracts aligned with the public school calendar.
