Burgundy Farm Country Day School is seeking a part-time First Grade Assistant Teacher to join a collaborative and joyful Lower School community. Burgundy Farm Country Day School is a progressive school located on a pastoral 25-acre campus near Alexandria, Virginia, serving 275 students from junior kindergarten through 8th grade. Position Overview:
Lower School teachers at Burgundy collaborate to design and implement a differentiated, integrated curriculum. The First Grade Assistant Teacher plays an important role in supporting both students and the lead teacher in creating a structured, joyful, and engaging classroom environment. This position includes working with small groups of students, supporting individual learners, preparing instructional materials, and assisting with daily classroom routines through lunchtime each day.
Qualifications:
Experience working with young children (ages 6-7), or a strong interest in doing so Understanding of child development and social-emotional learning Interest in progressive, inquiry-based, and experiential education Strong communication and collaboration skills Ability to support a positive, inclusive classroom environment Organizational skills and attention to detail Interest in outdoor and environmental education A degree in Elementary Education or a related field (preferred); graduate students in education or related fields are encouraged to apply A sense of humor and genuine love for working with children Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Supporting small group and one-on-one instruction Assisting in maintaining a structured, joyful, and inclusive classroom environment Supervising students during recess and transitions Preparing classroom materials and supporting daily instructional activities Collaborating with the lead teacher on classroom routines and student support Assisting with communication such as weekly newsletters and documentation of student learning Supporting students' social-emotional development and engagement in learning Participating in reflective practice and professional growth opportunities Attending a limited number of meetings and school events as determined with the lead teacher and
Lower School Head Schedule:
Monday-Friday:
7:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Optional faculty meetings:
Wednesdays, 3:00-4:30 p.m. (attendance is flexible and determined in collaboration with the Lower School Head) The School is closed for most national holidays, as well as Winter and Spring Break.
Compensation:
