Westminster School, an independent Preschool-8th Grade school in Annandale, Virginia, seeks an enthusiastic, motivated educator to serve as an Assistant First Grade Teacher / Math & Science Teacher beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. This unique position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career teacher who desires mentorship, meaningful classroom experience, and the opportunity to develop into a lead classroom teacher. The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced Westminster first-grade teacher in a classroom of approximately 15 students, receiving daily coaching and guidance while gradually assuming significant instructional responsibilities. More than a traditional assistant teacher position, this role functions as a teacher residency , providing hands-on experience, professional mentoring, and the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to become a successful lead teacher. The successful candidate will be considered for a lead lower-school teaching position for the 2027-2028 school year. Responsibilities Assist the lead first grade teacher with all aspects of daily classroom instruction and management. Support instruction in Language Arts, Social Studies, handwriting, and other homeroom activities. Provide small-group and individual academic support to students. Assist with supervision of students during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other school activities. Collaborate with specialist teachers and assist with classroom organization and preparation. Communicate professionally with colleagues, parents, and administrators. Serve as the lead teacher for first grade Math and Science , planning and delivering engaging, hands-on lessons that foster conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and scientific curiosity. Assess student progress in Math and Science and maintain accurate records. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, field trips, and parent conferences as requested. Qualifications Bachelor's degree required (Education or related field preferred). Passion for working with young children in a structured, academically rigorous environment. Strong classroom presence, organization, and communication skills.
