Under general supervision, the Academic Specialist, Mathematics serves as a member of the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) team and is responsible for designing, implementing, and delivering comprehensive academic support services that promote student persistence, academic achievement, retention, graduation, and successful transfer to four-year institutions. This position collaborates closely with program administrators, faculty, the Coordinator of Developmental Mathematics, and campus stakeholders to develop innovative strategies that address the academic and personal success needs of first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities. The Academic Specialist provides individualized academic advising, mentoring, tutoring, instructional support, and success coaching to program participants while serving as the program's primary mathematics content expert. The position is responsible for developing and facilitating academic success workshops, coordinating mathematics support initiatives, monitoring participant academic progress, and maintaining accurate documentation in compliance with U.S. Department of Education TRIO regulations. In addition to TRIO responsibilities, the Academic Specialist teaches up to two developmental mathematics courses annually (Fall and Spring semesters), utilizing evidence-based instructional practices designed to improve student learning outcomes and college readiness. The TRIO Student Support Services Program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education through a five-year grant cycle. This position is contingent upon annual reauthorization of federal funds. Continued employment is subject to the availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Provide comprehensive academic support, success coaching, and individualized learning strategies to TRIO participants. Tutor students in mathematics and STEM-related courses using evidence-based tutoring techniques that promote academic confidence and achievement. Conduct individualized academic assessments to identify learning barriers and develop personalized intervention strategies. Monitor participant academic performance and implement proactive interventions for students experiencing academic difficulty. Assist participants in developing effective study habits, time management skills, goal setting, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Collaborate with participants to develop individualized academic success plans that support persistence and degree completion. Conduct intake interviews and orientation for newly accepted participants based on assigned caseload. Support participant retention, persistence, graduation, and transfer initiatives through continuous case management and student engagement. Design, coordinate, and facilitate engaging academic success workshops that address topics including: Mathematics Success, College Success Strategies, Learning Strategies, Academic Technology Evaluate workshop effectiveness through participant feedback and assessment data to continuously improve programming. Teach up to two developmental mathematics courses annually in accordance with institutional policies and curriculum requirements. Routinely monitor and support operations within the TRIO Learning and Tutoring Commons. Promote utilization of tutoring services and supplemental academic resources. Maintain complete and accurate participant records in accordance with federal TRIO regulations. Utilize Blumen, Watermark, Live Excel reports, Microsoft 365, and other institutional technologies to document services and evaluate participant outcomes. Collect, analyze, and report participant data related to tutoring utilization, workshop attendance, advising contacts, academic progress, persistence, and graduation. Ensure all documentation meets U.S. Department of Education reporting requirements and institutional standards. Maintain participant confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies. Serve on institutional committees and workgroups as assigned. Represent the TRIO Program professionally throughout the college and community. Work Environment:

Primarily operates in a professional office, classroom, and tutoring center environment within a college campus. Frequent interaction with students, faculty, TRIO staff, and campus partners in both individual and group settings. Work includes a mix of instructional delivery, tutoring, advising, and administrative responsibilities, including data tracking and reporting. Regular presence in Tutor Lounge or academic support spaces, providing real-time assistance and oversight. Environment may be fast-paced and student-centered, especially during peak academic periods (midterms, finals, registration). Occasional participation in workshops, outreach initiatives, campus events, and TRIO programming, which may take place in various campus or community settings. Requires strict adherence to federal TRIO regulations, grant requirements, and confidentiality standards.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position: Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer, analyzing data, or providing virtual tutoring/instruction. Frequent standing, walking, and moving between classrooms, tutoring centers, and office locations. Regular use of computers, instructional technology, calculators, and presentation tools. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both one-on-one tutoring and group instructional environments. Occasional lifting or carrying light materials (up to 15-20 pounds) such as textbooks, instructional supplies, or workshop materials. Requires visual acuity and manual dexterity to review student work, prepare materials, and input/report data accurately.
