The Sisters of St. Francis are seeking subject matter experts to empower high school students in grades 9-12 to succeed academically, prepare for higher education, and build critical learning skills. If you are passionate about mentorship and education, we want you on our team! The Sylvania Franciscan TRiO Upward Bound Program is dedicated to supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program "seeks to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds, namely limited income and/or first-generation students" by providing the academic tutoring and mentoring necessary for higher educational access and retention.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Promote the values of the Sisters of St. Francis by demonstrating behaviors supportive of and a commitment to reverence; service and stewardship, including respect and involvement; community and teamwork; open and effective communication; and efficient and effective resource use. Adhere to SOSF policies, procedures, and objectives. Exhibit professionalism, kindness, and respect in attitude, attire, workspace, and interpersonal communications.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Support:
Deliver high-quality tutoring across core high school subjects based on your areas of expertise.
Active Learning:
Facilitate engaging tutoring sessions using interactive strategies like drawing diagrams, creating flashcards, developing outlines, and leading discussions.
Test Prep & Workshops:
Create and participate in SAT/ACT prep sessions, current event discussions, and student workshops.
Mentorship:
Encourage critical thinking, reading comprehension, and strong study habits.
SUBJECT AREAS NEEDED
Applicants must possess strong subject-matter knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
Math:
Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus Science:
Biology, Anatomy, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth & Space History:
World Studies, American History, and American Government English:
Levels 1-4 (Reading and Writing)
Spanish:
Levels 1-4 (Reading and Writing)
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Education:
Must hold a Bachelor's degree OR be an upperclassman college student (Junior/Senior standing).
Licensure:
A teaching license is preferred but not required.
Availability:
Available to work at least two days a week from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at either Woodward High School or Waite High School.
Subject Matter Proficiency:
Demonstrated knowledge in the specific high school subjects you wish to tutor.
Communication Skills:
Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and connect effectively with high school students. The position is a part-time, 6-hour per week position contingent upon receipt of continued federal funding of the TRiO Upward Bound grant.
